Rating: Summary: Indispensable Tool for Screenwriters Review: One of the best books on screenwriting in my library. Seger covers the basics, including the three-act structure, subplots, character development, common mistakes and much more, but also explains in detail how to find and correct weaknesses in a "completed" script. Seger excels at demystifying the screenwriting process in this "how-to" book, which is helpful for fledgling and experienced writers alike. Using examples taken from timeless classics like "The African Queen" and "Witness," Seger teaches writers how to do what the book title suggests -- make a good script great. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Indispensable Review: Well I was browsing around on Amazon, and I found all these negative reviews of this book -- I am SHOCKED and a bit suspicious of them. There are few things I'm passionate enough about to jump up and defend, but this book is one of them.Seger's book was the ONLY screenwriting book I read before writing "American Pie." Regardless of what you may think of that film, the fact is that this book taught me the things that made the screenplay SELL. Even in a teen comedy, you've got to have proper structure and character development. Seger's book is basic, yes -- _screenwriting_ is basic. Beginning, middle, end. Be original. Have a character or two arc. Have a relatable theme. Done. The fact that most writers get lost in less important details is maybe why some people expected this book to have more. It has everything you need.
Rating: Summary: Good coaching, helpful and easy to read Review: This is not a book about formatting scripts, font size, finding an agent, etc. It's emphasis is on the "big three" of screenwriting: structure, story development, and character development. Read this along with "Adventures in the Screen Trade" by William Goldman and you'll be on your way.
Seger is a good coach. It's irrelevant if she's won an Oscar or not. Pete Sampras, Mike Tyson, and Michael Jordan have coaches to perfect their craft and give them the edge. Let Seger do the same for you.
Rating: Summary: OUTDATED Review: Seger's "how to" book might have been okay for the scripts of twenty years ago (when it was originally published) but it offers no practical advice for today's modern screenwriter. The more recent editions contain nothing new and no updated information.
Rating: Summary: Good ideas for the beginner Review: A previous reviewer indicated that Hollywood is a closed society and you shouldn't bother even attempting to write a screenplay, never mind buy this book. I am not a famous Hollywood director, I'm just a college instructor, so maybe I don't know Hollywood, but I do know there's thousands of college students and others who are attempting to write scripts. I've read many of them and they stink. This book helps the beginner with some ideas about characterization and script structure: two areas most beginners' scripts need help with badly. Do these writers have any chance of selling their scripts? That's not the issue here. If you're going to write one at least use a book like this to show you how to use a 3 act structure and the functions of a well-developed antagonist. Seger does this and the book is worthwhile for that. Should you pay her to fix your script? Answering that question isn't why you're reading these reviews.
Rating: Summary: Excellent classic! Review: New screenwriting books come out constantly, but Linda's book remains a well thumbed classic! Great for seasoned pros and beginners. Marisa D'Vari, author, Script Magic.

Rating: Summary: Great scripts start with a great book! Review: This book was incredible!!! It guides you from idea to revision in a clear, consice manner. It is filled with references to famous movies and their scriptwriters. There is so much helpful information I wanted to start writing right away, but I followed the authors advice and planned out more of the story on notecards before I started in--which saved the script from the trashcan. Although it does not include any part of script formatting, the examples are formated correctly. The bottom line: This book should be required reading for all film school students, all Hollywood professionals and anyone else who wants to make a great script!
Rating: Summary: What to do, how to do and how to redo it all, Seger is great Review: Well If you bought this book or planning to, you must be stuck somewhere along the line or don't have the slightest idea how to tell your story... worry no more! With examples from succesful writer's works and unusually easy methods, Seger takes your hand and helps you cross the street!
