Rating: Summary: One of the best Review: Linda's book is really one of the best available. In a concise, economical style she explains the basics then beyond. Every writer I know has read it and praises it.
Rating: Summary: It's What You Do With It That Counts Review: Making a Good Script Great is chock full of useful "how to" information only if you get down to the job at hand--re-writing that screenplay! This book, one of several on my shelf, gets referred to weekly! I enjoy the author's "intellectual" approach which is tempered with practical "how to sell" information. I highly recommend it to new and veteran writers alike.
Rating: Summary: Very worthwhile Review: I bought this book several years ago, not only has it been incredibly helpful, but I have even bought copies as gifts for other aspiring screenwriters. Utilizing the principles demonstrated in Dr. Seger's books, coupled with studying sold / produced (not "published") scripts, and rewriting, rewriting, rewriting, my scripts have placed highly in national competitions and obtained studio attention. Dr. Seger's books are refreshing, direct, and educational. They are very worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: I Call You Clutter Review: I am quite frankly surprised at some of the negative comments about this book. When someone in Hollywood rejects your script with a quick "Stakes aren't high enough" or "The second act sags" or any other euphenisumistic cliche for poor character development, are you really going to turn to Syd Field for help? Don't get me wrong; Syd's a great 101 book and I re-read it everytime I start to rewrite after my first draft. But if you haven't moved on to Linda Seger or Peter Brooks' "Reading For The Plot" or Lew Hunter's "Screenwriting 434" you're probably just producing well-structured clutter.
Rating: Summary: A screenwriter's bible. Review: Making a Good Script Great has been a very important book for me since I began my career. It's clear and easy to use, and has improved every script that I've written. If you're writing screenplays, I believe it is the most important reference book to have on your shelf.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT Review: I AM A SCREENWRITER AND I TEACH SCREENWRITING. SEGER'S BOOK HAS PROOVED AN INDESPENSIBLE TOOL. I SINCERELY RECOMMEND "MAKING A GOOD SCRIPT GREAT" TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE SUBJECT.
Rating: Summary: No Guarantees In Life Review: Screenwriting, like any creative process, is a matter of opinion & taste. I have probably read aboug 3/4 of the books on screenwriting as I consider it part of my job (story analysis/development specialist). MAKING A GOOD SCRIPT GREAT may not be for the absolute beginner, but it does point a writer in the right direction with solid information & examples on plot, structure & characterization. In scrolling through the reviews on this book, writers need to realize that no book, not even MAKING A GOOD SCRIPT GREAT, can guarantee an agent, a sale or a career. It is a reference book, not a magic wand. But after assessing more than 16,000 motion picture & television projects & conducting workshops for the past 15 years, MAKING A GOOD SCRIPT GREAT is still one of the top 5 books I can recommend to my students & clients. Also high on my recommended list are books written by Hauge, Field & DiMaggio.
Rating: Summary: An Instant Classic Review: Look, if you want to write a screenplay, buy this book. Learn your craft before you do anything else. I read about 6 books before I got to this one. I felt like jumping up and down, because it was the first one that told me HOW it's done. Thank you, Linda! END END
Rating: Summary: Making a Good Script Great tells how to do just that! Review: This title, by famed Hollywood script doctor, Linda Seger, is the definitive book on the subject of screenwriting for Hollywood, and a MUST-READ for any beginning screenwriter or anyone who wants to SELL their already-written screenplays to Hollywood. Step-by-step, and category-by-category, you are led to see and clearly understand the structure and different elements of a successful screenplay which can be produced on film. You learn how to take that "good" screenplay and turn it into a GREAT screenplay, which is exactly what Hollywood is looking for. Buy the book.
Rating: Summary: BEST YET Review: I found Linda's book to be easy to read, to understand and to work from. Her own in-depth understanding of what makes a good script great makes this an indespensible workbook, guide and reference. I am recommending it to my writing clients.
