Rating: Summary: Essential tool but could be improved Review: When playing the Scrabble crossword game, I find it helpful that this dictionary includes many two to eight letter words not found in many standard dictionaries. I also like the fact that it is very clear about spellings of inflected forms of words. It is also helpful to include definitions (albeit very brief ones), as I often play for fun rather than for serious competition. I often will play so that using the dictionary to search for words is allowed (with agreement in advance of all players), so that the game can not only be fun but a good way to learn new words as well. I am also glad that offensive words have been omitted from the most recent edition; I do not approve of cursing and swearing for any reason. One suggestion I would like to make for future editions is to include words longer than eight letters; it's probably not uncommon to be able to write nine-letter words. Perhaps the next edition could include nine and ten letter words as well. It would be ideal to include all allowed words (offensive words excluded) from two to fifteen letters, as the Scrabble board has fifteen squares in each directions, thus allowing for words of up to fifteen letters. But some extension of the eight letter "limit" would certainly be appreciated.
Rating: Summary: Gotta have it... but Review: While this isn't the complete Official Word List for competitive Scrabble, it is incredibly handy. The only complaint I have is that the printing is really bad in the paperback version and it is sometimes hard to read the letters--this from someone that has 20/15 vision. Buy the hardback edition unless you need the portability.
Rating: Summary: CRWTH Review: With over 100,000 two-to-eight-letter words & 1,000 new entries over the previous edition, this little paperback comes in handy for Scrabble and other word games--even crossword puzzles. All entries are printed in bold caps with brief definitions, parts of speech labels, & various forms of words cross-referenced.I agree with some of the other reviewers on the addition of off color words now being accepted. A sign of our times I guess. Yet, it is fun to peruse & especially easy to handle while travelling. CRWTH? Hmm, a word with no vowels! I came across that one, meaning an ancient stringed musical instrument. A section of other vowel-less words would be nice and maybe Q words that need no U-qat etc. All in all, a good addition to reference collections & keeping a good game fun. In our family we play having to use the word in a sentence!
Rating: Summary: Great deal Review: Wow, I actually know the meanings of the words I have been using in scrabble now. Yes, I started referring to this book as I use the words and now I am a much better player. You would hate to look the meaning in an ordinary dictionary because it would take more time and it might not be given in there. (this is scrabble!).
Rating: Summary: A Great Workhorse Review: You can tell if a dictionary is used for Scrabble. It may have dog-eared corners, loose or ripped pages, coffee stains, a missing cover, a broken spine, and any number of other imperfections. Eventually, it may need to be replaced. This is why The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (Third Edition) is a great purchase. It won't necessarily help you once a word exceeds eight letters, and may sometimes fail on words of fewer letters, but it is certainly an inexpensive way to save a copy of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary (recommended for use for words over eight letters) from absorbing a great deal of wear and tear.
Rating: Summary: Essential for Playing Scrabble Review: You have to have this dictionary to play scrabble because it lists the acceptable words that can be used. It's especially important when playing with people who don't play as often because some of the words you remember when playing scrabble are obscure so people will challenge you until they get burned a few times. It's also important because people will try to make up words that don't exist so when you challenge they lose their turn if you refer to the official dictionary. This edition is not the "official, official" word list because it's for recreational and school play. So naughty words are not in it that should be. Nevertheless, it is important to have handy when playing.
