Rating: Summary: A Must for Serious Scrabble Review: If you are serious Scrabble player you need this dictionary. If you play any computer scrabble games most are based on this dictionary. It does not have some new terms such as the word Zen, but if you are playing with friends you can decide what words and dictionaries to use. At home we all have our own copy and have worn out more than one copy of the paperback. We tried a hardback and it does have longer wear but we found it cumbersome. It is also helpful to buy can additional scrabble resource that identifies 2 letter words and consonant only words. This book is a definite need for scrabble playing and it is sure to increase your vocabulary.
Rating: Summary: Helpful, but technically not official Review: If you play scrabble around the home, this is a fun, helpful book to have around. The National Scrabble Association web page on May 2004, has a tournament rules list that is dated May 2002. In these tournament rules, the reference section is as follows: a) Official Tournament & Club Word List Official Tournament & Club Word List (OWL) contains the only 2- to 9-letter words acceptable for club and tournament play, published by Merriam-Webster, Inc. b) Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition (MW10) For words of more than nine letters, the OWL is consulted first. If a longer word (more than nine letters) is not listed in the OWL, to be judged acceptable it must appear as a main entry or inflected form or alternate spelling in bold print in (MW10). It must not be capitalized, hyphenated, contracted, foreign or listed only as part of a multi-word phrase. Words of fewer than 10 letters listed in MW10 but not in the OWL are not acceptable, nor are inflections of main entries of fewer than 10 letters. Any word used in the definition of another word but not listed itself is not acceptable.
Rating: Summary: buy this book Review: If you play Scrabble, even occasionally just for fun, be sure to get this book. It will settle are arguements for what is(n't) allowed in legal play. While this is not the same list that is used for tournament play (some word deemed too offensive have been deleted) this will suffice for any home game. Now about deleting valid English words from legal play? That is bologna...some people may find the words "war" or "gun" offensive, but those are still listed while explitives, vulgarities, slurs and the like have been deleted...I took a star away because their desire to be PC.
Rating: Summary: Good to have Review: If you're a big fan of Scrabble, & you have those words that have to be challenged, then this is the book for you. Just use it to it's full potential.

Rating: Summary: This dictionary really helps when you play scrabble! Review: It may seem like a normal dictionary at first, but The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary is very different. It contains words that you won't find in many other dictionaries (like 'qaid, sheqalim, and many others) and are all acceptable in Scrabble. If you have a word that's a real word and isn't in any other dictionary, it might be in this. This book has really helped my Scrabble playing.
Rating: Summary: Large print edition too hard to handle. Review: My grandmother is an avid UpWords player. At 98, her eyesight isn't what it once was, and she needs to use a magnifying glass to use her small print version of this dictionary. So I thought it would be a great idea to get her this large print edition. I had read reviews, but didn't see any on this particular version. When it arrived I felt like kicking myself for not considering the size. It's about 8x11, and weighs just about five pounds. Basically it's got the heft of a bag of sugar, but it's twice as unwieldy, being large and floppy. No way on earth my grandmother could handle this. I guess this edition would be good for someone in great physical condition with the exception of poor vision.
Rating: Summary: great Review: Once you have used this book, no other dictionary will suffice.
Rating: Summary: Using something else? You're not playing by the rules. Review: One cannot truly compete if they aren't doing so by a clear and concrete set of rules. Without one, the competition in question becomes compromised, and, therefore, a farce. While every game of Scrabble includes a rule book of sorts, a dictionary is also needed to play, and every avid player knows that not all dictionaries are alike. Words are in one that aren't in another and vice versa. So, which one is telling the truth? There is no right answer to that question, but here's the solution. The authorization of this particular dictionary by the makers of Scrabble, along with an endorsement by the National Scrabble Association, make it an extension of the rule book itself, and it, in turn, makes the rules clear and concrete. Now, we can compete!
