Summary: A feast for lovers of odd words
Review: "The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary" (2nd edition) is a dictionary created especially for players of the classic Scrabble board game. Thus, each entry is stripped down to its bare essentials: the word, what part of speech it is, a very brief definition, and some inflected forms. If you're looking for extensive descriptions of word origins, look elsewhere.

The introduction notes that the dictionary includes "obsolete, archaic, slang, [and] nonstandard words." This includes a lot of words that would be considered obscene. There are plenty of ethnic slurs, as well as colorful words for private body parts and intimate biological functions--the "f-word" and its various derivations, for example, are included. So if you're sensitive about such matters, be warned!

Words greater than 8 letters long are not included (unless they are inflected forms of a main entry). Thus, for actual Scrabble play this book should be supplemented by a more general dictionary. Proper names, hyphenated words, and other words not acceptable in Scrabble are not included.

All that being said, this is an enormously entertaining dictionary. Words from "aa" ("rough cindery lava") to "zyzzyva" ("a tropical weevil") are included. Acceptable variant spellings of some words are also included; for example, we find out that "koumis," "koumys," "koumyss," "kumiss," and "kumys" are all acceptable spellings of "koumiss" ("a beverage made from camel's milk").

Other fun words included in this dictionary: "ajowan" ("the fruit of an Egyptian plant"), "britska" ("an open carriage"), "eeliest" ("superlative of eely"), "firepink" ("a flowering plant"), "maumetry" ("idolatry"), "peetweet" ("a wading bird"), "quokka" ("a short-tailed wallaby"), and "schmelze" ("a type of decorative glass"). Overall an indispensable resource for serious Scrabble players, and just a fun book for anyone else who loves offbeat words.

Summary: Missing words!
Review: "Submarine" is not a word--according to the OSPD! Apparently, while 9 letter words are possible in Scrabble, nothing over 8 are included here. Such was my revelation when, proudly laying the word "submarine", it was disallowed according to this "official dictionary." If you use the OSPD to play Scrabble, be prepared to pare down your language.

Summary: Not the official tournament wordlist...
Review: ...but useful nonetheless. If you're interested in tournament play, you'll want to get the official wordlist from the NSA (in North America, anyway). There are some perjorative and otherwise "offensive" words that are legal for tournament play that have been left out here, as well as a few words that came into common usage after this dictionary was published (i.e. LATTE). For anyone else, this is a useful reference. Scrabble allows slang, obsolete and archaic words, and alternate spellings that are unlikely to be found in a normal dictionary, but are listed here, along with all their variants. I just wish it were thinner, so it would fit in the game box, though. You'd think they would have thought of that...

Summary: Gotta have it for scabble lovers
Review: A "must have" for scrabble players. I play on-line.

Summary: Of Little Value
Review: After using this dictionary for several games, I scrapped it in favor of the collegiate American Heritage Dictionary. While word forms are easily found, and this saves some time in looking up challanged words, I must join in the symphony of cricticism concerning the editors attempt to regulate acceptable words.

The "offical" Scrabble dictionary is nothing of the sort. As noted by previous reviewers, slang terms are permitted, yet this word-list is misguided in its attempt to make Scrabble a kinder, gentler game.

Please save your money and buy a good dictionary that can be used as a reference tool and as a dictionary and will permit "offensive" words that the Scrabble Dictionary (but the rules) do.

Summary: A must for scrabble players
Review: As a casual Scrabble player and enthusiast, I knew that I wanted to get an official source of all the Scrabble words. After purchasing this dictionary, I'm confident that I have the definitive source of all the 2-8 letter words that you can play in Scrabble.

This book does have some shortcomings, though. Some of the definitions are really weird. For example, when I looked up matilda it said something about a hobo's travelling bag. When I looked up the word in the dictionary the definition was different. The definitions of words are usually quite obscure. If the word can be used as a verb then that form is used. Another thing I don't like about this dictionary is the font of the words. Every word is listed in capital letters only (AARRGH). That makes it harder to memorize.

Overall, this is a good book though. This paperback edition is convenient and a bargain. It's portable, perusable, and pliable. There are enough words here to quench the thirst of any word freak. I have already learned some new and interesting words like goliard, otalgia, zyzzyva, and matilda. I frequently peruse this dictionary and there's always a new word to learn. This dictionary has more words than I can handle and it's mind boggling how someone can memorize these words. From the obscure to the archaic, this dictionary will provide you words that will give you an edge in playing Scrabble.

Summary: More like "The Official Non-Scrabble Players Dictionary"
Review: As an avid Scrabble player, I have found this dictionary to be somewhat of a joke. I am surprised by the words that are, according to this dictionary, supposed to count in a game of Scrabble. It's as if everything and anything goes. I used this dictionary for a few weeks until my Scrabble friends finally convinced me to toss it!

Summary: Perfect for English version Scrabble players everywhere
Review: Disputes will easily be settled with this wonderful book, and there are no offensive terms in this version (although I wonder why they took out words like "fatso" and "redneck").

Summary: definative!
Review: Excellent for the hardcore scrabble player
