Summary: THE "grassroots" guide to cigars
Review: A great book for the novice. From where the tobacos are grown to the history of the men behind the blends. The brand guide is already outdated but a good starting point for the beginner still.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Wonderful Entry Point Into World of Cigars
Review: For one just beginning to "seriously" get into cigars, this has provided a most helpful resource.

From the monumental tips on determing what cigar size and shape for you to how to cut, light, purchase, store, revive and rate cigars, this is just a great and "fun" resource to turn to.

There's also a neat section on matching drinks with cigars and just a wonderful section on Cuban cigars: are they what everyone says they are!

Recommended place to start.

Summary: The Perfect Introduction to Cigars
Review: Having several friends who enjoy cigars I decided to check out a tobacconists shop only to be completely overwhelmed. I went home and did a search on Amazon and bought several books. Of them all, this one turned out to be the most helpful, most enjoyable and most complete book of the bunch. It was very easy to read and very insightful. It explained everything I needed to know about cigars and didn't make me feel like I had to go out and spend a fortune on cigars and accessories. This book made my next trip to the tabacconist very enjoyable. A must have for every cigar smokers library, experienced and beginner alike.

Summary: A Beginners MUST HAVE!
Review: I bought this book a couple of years ago when I first got interested in cigars. The title just seemed to fit how I felt about the subject. The information contained in this book is so widespread that you will be able to join in almost any cigar conversation. The book covers everything from where certain tobaccos are grown to what type of matches to use to light your smoke and why. After reading this book I have caught cigar retailers mistakes in telling me about their inventory. A good knowledge is necessary for buying a quality smoke and this book offers it.

Summary: The fad is over, but the love of cigars remains!
Review: I wrote this book knowing the cigar fad, like all fads, would fade. I also knew that the heightened awareness of how great cigars are would win over many who had never enjoyed this simple pleasure. My book focused on the solid, established brands and how the best makers have crafted fine cigars for more than three centuries. I didn't rate the fad brands, as did most rating guides, because I knew they'd disappear. And they have. Nearly every brand in my book is still available, because they're the best, and made by the best! There have been several mergers in the business, but the quality and integrity of most name brands remain. And Cuban cigars are spottier than ever. So whether you're a beginner or a veteran stogie lover, I hope you'll read, enjoy, and refer to my Complete Idiot's Guide to Cigars. For a quick reference guide you can tote to your favorite cigar shop or cigar bar, check out my Pocket Idiot's Guide to Cigars, also available at Amazon.com.

Summary: Great reading for anyone interested
Review: I've only read a handful of books from cover to cover, and this is one of them.

This book provided some great information and helped me appreciate the delicate process of making a cigar. I learned alot of tricks I didn't even think of before this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in cigars. This is mostly for beginners, but experienced smokers will enjoy this as well.

Summary: Excellent info for the novice.
Review: Nice book for the beginner. Great background on cigar lingo & history. Only drawback is that cigar ratings will become outdated unless revised frequently. Easy way to become familiar with cigar brands, but not sizes. Much less redundant than the horde of Cigar Aficionado literature.

Summary: A complete basic cigar primer
Review: The book is well-organized, allowing you to skip sections that you're not interested in (pipes, collectibles). Descriptions of how cigars are made play into the complete discussion of selecting and smoking cigars. A basic table of cigar "strength" in the beginning of the book is helpful. There are some omissions in the appendices describing basic cigar brands, but I suppose the date and expediency prevent this guide from being a reference text. Could use some more in-depth discussion of wine, beer, and spirits. Good for beginners like me.
