Summary: This is a fantastic self-sufficiency book!
Review: If you want to keep livestock, grow a garden, preserve food, clean and pluck a chicken or grow mushrooms in the basement--all of these things and many more are explained in this book. It is like a modern version of the Foxfire series, and it has given me hours of enjoyment.

Review: This is a wonderful collection of wisdom, recipes, and experience. After reading this book, I'm ready to buy a few acres, some chickens and a milk cow. My husband cannot believe it! I highly recommend it. I just sent a copy to a friend.

Summary: The old 1975 version is priceless!
Review: When I first saw this wierd-looking rainbow-colored 1975 "Old Fashioned Recipe Book" in 1978, I fell in love with it. I traded a bolt of white bridal satin for it, and have never regretted that trade! Of course the binding fell apart, but a 3-ring notebook holds it now. I think it was printed on a hand-crank mimeograph drum on stiff colored craft paper. Carla's book has been my companion for 21 years now, and I still find things in it that I didn't see before. She wrote about real life, and real family love. The recipies are secondary. I'd like to see the new version, but the original is priceless. Of the dozens of 'cook books' I own, this is the one I return to most often for basic information. Thank you, Carla.

Summary: good content, but spoiled by a terrible printing job
Review: Review of "The Encyclopedia of Country Living; An Old Fashioned Recipe Book" by Carla Emery.

I just can't believe this book. Well written, lots of good useful information, and a TERRIBLE printing job. As someone who works in the printing/publishing business, I find this unacceptable. The problem begins with the paper - dull, low-contrast newsprint that makes reading painful. The cheap paper is so fragile that my book was warped when I received it, and it's hard to turn the pages without tearing them. The binding is equally poor quality. If this were a mass-market paperback that you read once and then throw away, it might be forgiveable. But this is a reference book that most readers will want to keep for years - I find it difficult to believe that this book can least even a few weeks under normal use.

It's such a pity to see Ms Emery's fine work ruined by a bad printer. I would have given this book a five-out-of-five star rating if the printing had been at least mediocre, but now I can only give it three stars. I urge the author to visit a good bookstore or library and browse the selection of reference books and see what a GOOD printing job looks like. And after that, I suggest she finds a new printer.

Summary: The most amazing story plus real information!
Review: I bought one of the first edition from an ad in a goat husbandry magazine nearly 30 years ago. I could just kick myself that I lost track of that book somewhere in the course of many moves. I can't wait to see what this new edition looks like. I'm betting it has the same down to earth advise and information interspersed with the author's personal story and unique outlook on life.

Summary: A must-have guide to preparing food "from scratch"
Review: I have owned a copy of the Bantam edition for almost 20 years and consult it at least weekly. The book is incredibly dog-eared and the newsprint pages faded. After reading the reviews here I think I must get myself a copy of the current edition as well!

Summary: WONDERFUL AND VERY HELPFUL,VERY COMPLETE,BEST I EVER READ
Review: I would not take what Yakman from Canada said seriously, as I really doubt a 9th grader could ever write a better book, unless they do things so much diffrent in Canada ( which I doubt) I found this book to be very complete on all one needs to know to get started on Country Living. I also enjoyed the authors quick wit and sense of humor. I also admire the perserverevce it took to keep going and writing thru-out the hardships she had. I have her earlier book from the 70`s and I really enjoyed and used that book a lot. Thanks Carla for giving all of us this wonderful book. In fact I am ordering a few more to give as gifts to my fellow country friends:):):):)
