Summary: All you need to get started
Review: I disagree with the review that says it's too American. There is a chapter on international genealogical resources and in the chapters on RootsWeb, FamilySearch and general search sites it shows how to search for genealogies beyond North America. In all it's a good book to get you started in online genealogy.

Summary: Technologically Inept and Too American-centric
Review: I found this book a real disappointment. Anybody with more than rudimentary Web surfing skills with the ability to type "family history" in a decent search engine is likely to get more useful information than from this book.

For a "fifth edition", I expected a technically more competant exploration of geneological sources worldwide, rather than a book which devotes pages covering such material as spam email addresses, emoticons (i.e. "smileys"), and a lot of material which covers Web surfing basics. I would have liked to have seen more "meat" on how to get the most out of the online sources listed in the book.

Much of my ancestry of British + European origin, and again I was disappointed by the relative lack of information on the wealth of online info sources in this area that are available. The American-centric approach is a good one if your family has been in the States for several generations, but unless you're a native American, chances are good you have roots elsewhere.

Save your money, read the reviews here, and find a book that will better serve you in your geneological search.

Summary: Keeping up with the on-line world - Again!
Review: I just finished reading over "Genealogy Online" newest edition - for the first time. Obviously, this newest Millennium Edition is one that I will be using for reference on a continual basis. Ms. Crowe's newest revision is not only a very precise tool for guidance in on-line research, but also a wealth of information for all levels of genealogists. In the ever-changing world of the Internet it is very hard to present the "newest and best" of sites to hit. This book does that and more!

Summary: A question regarding latest upgrade of 5.0 and genealogy
Review: I need to know if there is a new updated book written by Ms. E. P. Crowe and Bill Mann for this new version, 5.0. We know that the book, Genealogy Online - Special America Online Edition, was written for the older version, 4.0 so right now I am using 5.0 Version and I want to know if there are new changes in the Genealogy Forum. If you do not know the answer, may I please email Ms. Crowe herself? Thank you and I am looking forward to hearing from you. B>J> Brandt

Summary: Outdated Material ... AGAIN
Review: I was extremely disappointed in Ms. Crowe's "updated" book about online genealogical research. Each edition of this book has been consistently behind the times, and her millenium edition is no exception. While she has made some excellent points in her research reference, it is ,most unfortunate that her information about the Genealogy Forum on America Online is so terribly outdated. The screen shots she has included are of screens that were replaced well over a year ago, and there is no mention of some of the excellent, newer resources there. If this is any indication of how current her descriptions are of other resources included in her book, many genealogists will hit the ground running a year or more behind. Ms. Crowe is a good writer. It's regretable she hasn't invested her time in making sure her material is more current.

Also, shame on the publisher for including a copyright date of the year 2000 in September 1999! They're obviously trying to extend the salability date of this book. Isn't there a copyright law to prevent this?

Summary: What a marvelous book!
Review: I've really enjoyed this book. I knew nothing about geneology when I got it. But the directions and advise were a great help to me in starting to research my family's surnames. In just a couple hours on the Web I was able to discover why my family has so much in common with the Pennsylvania Germans (although we don't live in PA), as well as discover that some of my father's ancestors may have immigrated from a particular area in Scotland. It was fun find these things on the Web, and the book was a great help in doing so. I'd definitely recommend it!

Summary: Don't Waste Your Money!
Review: Ms. Crowe has been writing about the Internet and genealogy for several years. In each new book, I expect her to have learned something new, but I'm always disappointed. I previewed the book in my local Barnes & Noble. Even without access to the Web, I found several outdated Web addresses, one of which changed almost two years ago! Doesn't she check these??? In addition, she still uses the term 'sysop,' a carry-over from the 1980s when people were using BBS's. It's time Ms. Crowe either learns enough about the modern Internet to be a credible authority on modern Internet-based genealogical research, or stops wasting people's time and their money.
