Summary: Master the Internet as an Effective Resume-Networking Tool.
Review: Hi! My name is Rebecca Smith, author of Electronic Resumes and Online Networking: How to Use the Internet to Do a Better Job Search, Including a Complete, Up-to-Date Resource Guide. Thanks for your interest in my book. I wrote it to provide a nice trim book as an alternative to printing 100+ pages from my Web site on this topic. I also took the opportunity to include step-by-step tutorials that you can use in the comfort of your own home without having to go online.

This book started out as a Web site that grew and grew in popularity. You see, the majority of published material on this subject is written from the point of view of the HR Manager/Recruiter. I approached the subject from the point of view of the successful job hunter. This provided useful advice and information that has helped many visitors use the Internet as an effective resume-networking tool. What started out as a hobby turned into a massive project as I started getting lots of visitor e-mail. To answer it all, I wrote articles for local computer rags and online publications. That was over three years ago. Before I knew it, links to my Web site started appearing on the "Oprah Winfrey" shows of online career sites: The Riley Guide, JobSmart, Microsoft.com, Career Magazine, and JobOptions, not to mention several university career sites and online business writing courses. With the help of everyone I mention in the Acknowledgements section, Electronic Resumes and Online Networking was published.

What's unique about my book is that it is not about resume writing. It's about how to take the content of an existing resume so that it is usable in an electronic form. Electronic Resumes and Online Networking helps you master the Internet as your most effective resume-networking tool.

This is the first book to combine job networking, resume development, and computer technology into one integrated strategy. A vast amount of technical data and information is concentrated and simplified into this trim little book in the form of useful advice and step-by-step tutorials. The tutorials guide you on how to create text-only, rich text, and hypertext resumes, how to post them, and how to measure their effectiveness once posted.

Technology is complex, but it does not have to be complicated. The electronic resume provides innovative ways of getting noticed in an increasingly online job market, where electronic file format is as important as style in presenting your qualifications, and the Internet can act as a multiplier on the effectiveness of your resume.

In this book, you'll see how Anya the College Graduate, Greg the Construction Worker, and Theresa the Management Consultant organize their online job searches. You'll also meet Thomas B. Seeker, whose resume is transformed into several different formats throughout the book. Also, find out why some people receive "gobbledygook" resumes via e-mail, and others don't. Learn how search agents can do your job searching for you. And find out how job seekers are using their Web resumes to find "right fit" jobs. If that isn't enough, there are over 70 pages full of tutorials with "cue sheets" that guide you through the process of creating different electronic versions of your resume.

Joyce Lain Kennedy, a Syndicated Careers Columnist and Bestselling Author who "discovered me" in a small corner of Cyberspace found this book so useful, that she wrote its foreword. I hope you will find it just as useful. Read this book, visit my site, and let me know about your own experience with applying for jobs online!

Summary: Valuable Source of Information
Review: I found Ms. Smith's book to be an outstanding reference source. It is a "must keep" for anyone's personal reference library. The author provided the reader with a clear and easy understanding of the processes behind on-line networking. Her use of analogies made even complex technological issues easily understood by the non-technical person.

Her suggestions for putting together a highly effective resume were outstanding. I am currently going through a career change, and found her resume formatting process to be superior. I am now in the process of completing my updated resume (using several of her techniques.) I am quite anxious to let it go on-line and see what develops. I have recommended her book to others.
