Rating: Summary: This worked for me!! Review: 1. Buy this book. 2. Study (hard). 3. Know your stuff. 4. Take exam on CD with this book until you score very high. 5. Take real exam and pass 6. Celebrate. 7. Keep book safe and refer to it when you need help with a server problem. 8. Repeat step 7 as necessary.
Rating: Summary: Good Reference, Really BAD study guide Review: As a reference book, I'd give this book 4 stars. The information contained therein is good with only a few errors (the picture of the SCSI adapter on page 126 is upside down guys). However, as a study guide I'd only give this book one star. The end of chapter questions are lame. The sample test is lame. The biggest problem however is that the Server+ exam objectives are listed only on the inside front cover and in appendix B. To find information on a single exam objectives, you might have to read up to 7 chapters. There is not even an electronic copy of the book on the CD-ROM which comes with the book. An electronic copy of the book would at least make finding information on a particular topic easier (search). In fact the CD-ROM only has a little over 2MB of information (sample test) on it. The contents would easily fit on two floppy diskettes.
Rating: Summary: Coriolis has put together a real good reference manual. Review: CompTia has created a new exam to measure the technical level of all server technicians and as with all other CompTia Exams this one I vendor neutral as well. Coriolis is become a leader in certification study material and this book is the perfect example. With 625 plus pages you will cover servers in the network environment like mail, database, RAS, fax, ftp, DNS, WINDS, DHCP and learn how setup server to be routers, bridges and gateways. Also the book goes over topics such as network fundamentals, hardware for the servers, storage systems including RAID and SCSI. How to take care of the working environment with focus on temperature and humidity. Configuring server operating systems like NT, UNIX, Linux, 2000 and Novell, and the maintenance and upgrading. Finally there is coverage of disaster recovery and the techniques used as well as operating system basics. Each chapter has review questions and projects to help give you hands on as well the cd with practice exam questions and you can online to download even more questions which can be setup in several test formats. Overall this book can help pass the very tough Server+ Exam.
Rating: Summary: Generally impressed Review: Having taken over 14 certification exams I can say that I have never seen one as odd as the Server+. Fortunately I passed and for that I was grateful. I really didnt want to take it again. I was impressed with the Server+ Exam Prep and felt that it prepared me very well for the test. The content is spot on and I agree with the Amazon review that it is written by a couple of knowledgable techs. The casual style works well and the occassional joke reminds you that you can have laugh about certian aspects of IT at the same time as taking it seriously. One last observation that has nothing to do with the book - Why do CompTIA have to charge so much for the exams? $190 for an exam from a not-for-profit organization seems steep. Just my 2 cents.
Rating: Summary: Pass on this one Review: I found this book hard to use to study for the Server+ exam. It was very hard to find out where the objectives map to the text by having to flip back and forth from the front of the book to the specific chapter!! It has it's share of typos and technical errors. Now I can see why this book is going for so cheap.
Rating: Summary: The best of three Review: I have used three different books to prepare for my exam. Two I bought and the other was loaned to me. Of the three, this is by far the best. The information in this book is more complete and focus has been given to those areas that are of most import for the exam. I value this as the objectives from CompTIA tell you what you need to know but give little indication as to the depth of knowledge required. The writing is clear, concise and of consistent quality throughout the book. There appears to be very few typos which is unusual for a technical book. My main observations are as follows:..... 1. The coverage is consistent with the objectives and the exam. When I took my test, I had no surprises which is what I expect from a certification preperation book. 2. Supporting information adds great value. Other books I have used for certifications seem to take a stance of providing a fact becuase it relates to the exam without explaining how it fits into the real world. This book steers clear of this appraoch and instead explains 'why' as well as 'what'. Where appropriate it also includes 'how'. I like this as it helps me to understand specific technologies or principles 3. The sample test at the back of the book and the CD are excellent. They appear to be close enough to the real thing without giving the exact questions from the exam. My only observations are as follows: 1. There are only a small number of diagrams. There are however quite a few photographs that are very useful as they show hardware that you would only see in certain environments. 2. The tests at the end of the chapters are very straight forward and could be more difficult. Overall this is an excellent book to help you prepare for Server+. The most oustanding feauture, in my opinion, is that after you have finished reading it you really feel as thoughyou have learnt something and not just been prepared to regurgitate facts for an exam. This book is of as much value to someone managing servers who isnt going to take the test as someone who is.
Rating: Summary: Just the job Review: I passed my Server+ today using this book as my main study tool. I was really pleased with the coverage the book gave and didn't detect any areas where it fell short. I am going to keep it close at hand as there is lots of useful info. Good Luck to all those taking Server+!
Rating: Summary: Pretty good Review: I passed the Server+ exam on tmy second try ($190x2!!)using the Exam prep book and an the cert21 question bank. The Server+ exam is very hard and this book covers pretty much the whole exam, at least the questions I had on my test.
Rating: Summary: Needs to be more exam focused Review: I think a lot of these Server+ books are missing the point. This one is a great book on network servers and network operating systems BUT just like a lot of the other Server+ books out there it is missing the point that these books are suppose to be the study guide for the CompTIA Server+ Certification and not just a Server hardware book. I find most Server+ study guides out there are great but not so great to use to pass the actual Server+ exam. I find there is not enough exam related information, sure there is tons of information on SCSI and RAID but it is missing the information on how it is presented on the exam. You will not see any question on the real exam that just asking you how many pins are on a specific SCSI cable or Storage device. The questions on the exam are scenario based, so you have to use some logic to figure out the correct answer and not just rely on remembering facts. The Server+ exam has a different approach then the A+ or Network+ exams. I think this is a great book on Server related material but I wish it was more exam focused.
Rating: Summary: Good book. Well written. Lots of personality Review: I was really pleased with this book.I passed my test with 91%. I used this and the cnequizzer. The book has lots of personality. If you are taking the test, make sure you know SCSI inside and out. Know the bus lengths and termination information. It is all in the book and I had loads of questions on it in the exam. I have always bought Exam Preps and will continue to do so.
