Summary: A good overview of the game industry.
Review: This book is an excellent overview of the game industry. It goes into some detail regarding the different positions and the rolls people play within a game company; programmers, producers, artists and some of the specialties within each category. Marc takes the time to explain the basic skill sets that are expected of a candidate and suggests a few ways of making yourself stand out from the crowd.

It contains a good deal of practical advise for the beginner who wants to break into the industry and certainly does it's best to dispel some of the myths that surround it (you will not be playing games all day at work!). He also has some good refreshers for those of us who have been around for a while that we all need to be reminded of on occasion (Network!).

This book is not a magic bullet, but nothing could be... but it sure give some good suggestions on how to aim.

Summary: No Help To Me!
Review: This is one of the worst attempts at writing a book I have ever seen, let alone writing one on getting a job in the game industry. Several people I know have used the advise from this book: one got fired outright; another ended up getting sued by his boss; a third is now an alcoholic.

Summary: Ahh, now I understand
Review: Was very helpful understanding the ways to get into a very hard industry. Will it help a newbie like myself, I guess we'll see in a few months. The book is well laid out, describing the different areas of game production. It has little headers by other game developers in some areas that explain about the certain chapters and how they deal with the situation. Its written very well, and you get a sense of which direction you want to take when pursuing a career and the problems that you may face along the way.

Summary: Getting The Game
Review: When I was getting into the game development world, I would have loved a book like Get in the Game. Marc Mencher provides valuable insight into all the nooks and crannies of the game development business and, most of all, how to break through and get into "the game" and more importantly, stay part of the industry! The writing was organized so that within seconds, you could have all the information you needed on a specific subject... IMHO, you've got to learn from the experience that pours out of the book.
