Rating: Summary: I was very upset after buying this book Review: The entire book is composed of snippets explaining how to perform certain IOS functions. The author frequently tells the reader a high level overview of a function and does not go into any level of detail. It would have been nice to see a few example configurations
Rating: Summary: The Cisco CD gives you more useful information. Review: I bought this book and returned it. I don't know how this book could help any one pass the CCIE. Check out the Hutnk's "All in one lab study guide" at least they have complete configurations and detailed explanations. I bought this book based on the reviews; I don't think these people read the same book. Maybe they just took his class, beats me...
Rating: Summary: Essential for CCIE Certification Review: I had the pleasure of not only reading the book, but attending the class based on the book which is taught by the author (Caslow). What better testimony for the book's worth can I give than to admit that I am a CCIE and his book and class were an important part of my preparations. I think Caslow may have thought I was just stroking him when I told him that his class changed my life, but it really did. If you want to become a CCIE, buy the book. It might amaze you how many of us CCIEs have it on our book shelves.
Rating: Summary: This book is really for no body to pass ccie qualification Review: If you are a beginner, the book is too deepIf you have passed several ccnp exams, and wants to learn something further, there is nothing there. There are vey few complete configure examples. The examples are bits and pieces. Went through the ATM chapter, the author wants the reader to remember the big mistake-Lane config database server. The database should be pointing to the lane server-bus atm address, but the book asks reader to remember to point to the lane client atm addresses. Each chapter's list of commands, they are anywhere. Any decent book will have that. I just feel very frustrated whenever I want to find something a little bit deeper, it is not there. The author will point you to cisco or their web site (advertisement of course). I do not see how anyone can pass the CCIE qualification exam and the lab exam by using this book with several scenerios and spot issues. In a word, it is only tell you what should be done, but seldom show/teach you how what should be done. If the audience of the book is intended for those who have already passed the exams, then rename it. Stephen Hutnik & Michael satterlee's "All-in-one CCIE Lab Study Guide" is really the book that teaches you how to prepare the CCIE lab. It is THE BEST book.
Rating: Summary: Great book so far, but lots of mistakes... Review: I just purchased this book so I've only read a few chapters. It's been excellent so far and I've learned much already (some interesting frame relay info that I didn't know, and all about SRB, SRT, SR/TLB, etc...) However, even I can spot MANY typos and errors in the examples and tables. Buy the book, but be careful...make sure you double check everything.
Rating: Summary: Definitely the best CCIE book to-date Review: Excellent book written in a very logical and step-by-step approach. Each chapter starts with simple problem scenarios and ramp up to very complex stuff. Definite book to have for CCIE prep.
Rating: Summary: An excellent study blueprint Review: Before I read this book I spent months floundering without a well-designed study plan for the CCIE Lab. Like the blueprint for building a house, this book gave me a clear plan to build my knowledge for the Lab, from the foundation up. Many of these CCIE books say as an after thought, "Oh yeah, you need an organized study plan." This book gives it to you with the information you need to judge your level of knowledge and what you need to work on. This book cannot replace hands-on experience but, it can show you how to make that experience more worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: very detailed book Review: plenty of typical problems which occur in a network and how to troubleshoot.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, one of the best I have read Review: This book is an excellent resource, a great deal of information in a very available format. The book is pretty good about sticking to the outline, and then makes great references to other resources. Forget the certs, if you are a Cisco person, you need this book.
Rating: Summary: Solid Material for CCIE Lab Stuff Review: This book is a superb collection of scenarios, technologies, and is well-written. Of course it is not meant to be for beginners, but is more useful to the folks who already have some experience on cisco stuff and for preparing for the Labs. The FR, ISDN, ATM chapters are solid to start with. This book clears many common misconceptions. It is well-structured like from Layer 2 to Layer 3. and it also talks good detailed stuff on Cat 5000 series switches. I especially liked the boot-up details with time in seconds given. All in all, this is one of the Top Two books i recommend for anyone giving his Labs. The other book is of course Geoff Doyle's TCP/IP Routing Vol.1.
