Rating: Summary: Well conceived, well written -- a fine reference. Review: Compared to the other books in this territory -- Vihalia's, John Graham's, Cockroft's, Cox & Goodheart, all of which I consider valuable reading -- this one is simply a pleasure to read.Mauro and McDougall just seem to know when to breathe in their writing. Very few sentences seem rushed, dense or ornately detailed. They write with a "big picture" feel, and yet all the details I wonder about as I read seem to crop up in the next paragraph. They know how to keep the reader thinking in a direction they can address. It's a very calming and informative ride. I really wish they had waited to base the book on Solaris 8, but there's not much you can do about such things. Hats off to the authors for producing a Sun book that will stay dust-free on my shelf for a long time.

Rating: Summary: Excellent reference on Solaris Internals! A must buy! Review: Don't have words to express the work done by these two! Great reference for Solaris SA's and programmers.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book. Very recommended ! Review: Excellent book. This is very valuable book, provides concentrated hard to find information in clear form. All examples work! Book is nice illustrated with system diagrams that help you to understand described mechanism. The book really goes deep and keep you feeling like investigator in the Solaris internals. Very recommended !
Rating: Summary: Best book on Performance analysis and Understanding Solaris Review: I found this book very useful. I'm using it almost every day. It has valuable information regarding solaris performance and general understanding of solaris internal architecture. This is the one i was waiting for very long time. Surely recommended for SA's, Performance Analysts !!
Rating: Summary: Good Overview, but not deap enough Review: I really thought this book was a good overview, but lacked the depth of some of the other publishers examinations of the Unix operating system. This book in conjunction with another more indepth analysis of Unix, would be a good start to understanding the internals of Solaris. I found the book disapointing, only because I was look for a more indepth look at Solaris.
Rating: Summary: Strongly recommended. Review: I strongly recommend this book to Solaris application programmers and system admins who are interested in performance tuning. This book covers a broad over view of the Solaris kernel subsystems (except I/O, devices, and networking). It has a lot of insideful information for system performance tuning. Howerver, if you are interested learning programming the kernel, this books is falling short in practically every topic it covers -- it has excellent over view, but nothing in depth (except locking). Nevertheless, it's an excellent companion book to the Solaris source code which everyone can obtain a free license. This books is very well written. Unlike the other System V Unix internal book which loading up /usr/include/sys include files and called it kernel internal, these authors actual discuss each kernel component. Although this book is falling short in depth, it's still a very useful book for solaris programmers and system admins. Strongly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book. Strongly Recommended. Review: I'd like to correct my previous review written on Feb 21,2001. I said that "practically falling short in depth in every topic it covers..." is a mistake. The book has gread in depth coverages on Solaris thread architecture, kernel dispatchers (scheduler), and synchronization locks. The coverage on kernel memory is fairly detailed also. Topics falling short in depth are IPC, and file systems. Because IPC and filesystem topics are located at the end of the book, as I read and remember the later short falls and forget the previous in depth details. As I wrote the review, I did not have the book in front of me. Sorry for the error. Topics I think missing are: 1. I/O subsystems 2. Devices and driver interfaces (sun has this info available from their document sets). 3. networking (both System V and sockets) 4. Clasical pipe in Unix IPC. 5. streams (kernel part). 6. loadable kernel module architectures. 7. clustering. I hope these topics will be covered in the second edition of the book. Strongly recommended the book.
Rating: Summary: An in depth analysis of Solaris architecture Review: There are no other books in print that can give you the specifics of Solaris in such detail as this one. If you are developing software for the Solaris platform this book will give you a greater understanding of how Solaris works internally. I know... Reading a book on OS Internals can be a bit dry at times, but this book is truly a great companion to Unix Internals, The Design of the 4.4 BSD Operating System, and The Design of the UNIX Operating System and belongs on the bookshelf of any self respecting UNIX geek. Highest recommendation.
Rating: Summary: One of the Top Books on Solaris/UNIX Internals Review: This book will teach you everything you want to know about Solaris. It is an excellent Operating Systems book and can be used as a reference or text. It digs into the guts of the kernel and intimately presents the fine details of Solaris operation.
