Summary: Very Good for Beginners
Review: Although I found the book to be well written and generally accurate, in times of need it did not supply any answers or ideas for my administration problems. For someone wanting to learn the basics of administering Exchange 2000, this is a good choice. When it comes to the "nitty-gritty" detail, like how to block incoming or outgoing E-Mails for selected users, or configuring an Exchange Server for multiple E-Mail domains, then it falls short of my needs. I would expect an administrator's companion to cover just about everything that can be configured in Exchange 2000 ! This book doesn't supply that need.

Summary: A great primer on Exchagne 2000 Administration
Review: As a primer on Exchange 2000 administration, this book stands up remarkably well. Although some topics (such as disaster recovery) lack the necessary depth, the coverage is generally thourough and intelligent, striking the right balance between concepts, how-to's, and gotcha's. Subject exposition is extremely lucid and precise, permitting easy access to its rather broad range of topics while providing the proper foundation for further study.

Summary: Wish I bought this book first
Review: I bought this book after I bought the MCSE training kit. I wish I'd just bought this first! Concise, intelligently written, and definitive. If you're an Exchange 5.5 admin or an MCSE who wants to get into Exchange 2000, then buy this instead of the fluff that Microsoft passes as the MCSE training kit.

Summary: Excellent Depth - Easy to Read
Review: I have been working with Exchange since it first released. I started working with Exchange 2000 pretty early into the beta testing process. This is an incredible book and provided tons of new information that I still did not fully grasp despite all of my work in the area.

I can't recommend this book enough. The coverage of routing groups and connectors is fantastic. Instant messaging is one topic covered here that many Exchange 2000 books gloss over. This book is perfect for the person wanting to add depth to their Exchange 2000 knowledge.

Summary: Fantastic !
Review: I have really enjoyed this book, but I think those new to Exchange and messaging systems might find it overwhelming. It does assume a general knowledge of Exchange Server 5.5 and Windows 2000. I would definitely recommend reading a book on Windows 2000/Active Directory first as this knowledge is crucial to the understanding of Exchange 2000. However, those familiar with Exchange 5.5 and Win2K will find this book extremely valuable. Even newcomers to Exchange will find the detailed hands on descriptions of daily administration tasks very helpful.

I've been specializing in Exchange Server 5.x deployments for about two years now and this book was just what I needed to get me up to speed fast with Exchange Server 2000. The book is big, but it's organized quite well so it's easy for you to just read the chapters about the topics you want whenever you like. It's also written very well, easy to read and won't put you to sleep like some other Microsoft offerings. I just got started reading it today and couldn't put it down. I ended up knocking off over 300 pages by days end ; also having successfully installed Exchange 2000 on my home network, configured Internet Mail ( SMTP, POP3 and OWA ), Recipients and Recipient Policies, Storage Groups, Public Folders, etc, etc. Tommorrow, I hope to finish the chapters on Security, Disaster Recovery, Clustering, Routing Groups and Connectors. I think by then I will be ready for most any Exchange 2000 deployment !

Summary: Some good, some bad...
Review: I was disappointed that there seemed to be a lot of inaccuracies and incorrect information. Someone in a newsgroup explained to me that many of the statements in this book are incorrect because it was based on Exchange 2000 Beta 3 software and not the final version. The book should state that on the cover, rather than having the reader have to research a topic to verify that it is correct. That is why I bought the book in the first place. This is another disappointing release from Microsoft Press. Is it too much to ask for reasonable accuracy in a technical book? Is it too much to ask that a publisher let people know when a book was written using beta software? I don't think so.

There was some good things about this book, but it is pretty basic overall and some of it seems to be re-hashed material from other Microsoft texts and whitepapers.

Summary: Fantastic !
Review: Superb book that deals with both practical aspects ( planning, installation, security etc.), and concepts. It is written in a very detailed manner, which at first was quite frustrating to read, but is very useful for sections that I was unfamiliar with. This is an excellent guide for people that are familiar with Exchange 5.X. I was particularly impressed with the sections on client installations and selection. I learnt a lot of stuff that I did not even know were possible with MS Exchange. Good buy!!
