Summary: Book released too soon
Review: This book claims to include coverage of RedHat 8.0, but this is only partially true. The book was written before the release of version 8.

Two of the most difficult topics of RHCE, Bind and Sendmail suffer from this. For example, important Sendmail config files are not mentionned (/etc/mail/access and /etc/mail/local-hostnames). Without configuring those files, your mail system may well not work at all...

The author's explanations are from time to time rather vague, perhaps because he's not too sure about what version 8 will really be.

A few typo mistakes make you lose some time.

On the positive side this book is written in a straightforward style and really focuses on the practical aspects, whith labs you can practice on. It tends to concentrate on the essential, without drowning you under tons of useless commands and switches.

Don't expect to find much theory in this book and don't expect it to bring you some profound & thorough linux knowledges. For this, you will have to rely on other sources.

Summary: A must read for the RHCE exam!
Review: This book helped fill in the blanks in my knowledge. It's the only book that I've found that clearly explains how to compile a kernel. It provides a nice intro to basic iptables firewalls. The practice labs and sample exams are making me more confident that I can actually pass the RHCE exam. It has helped me understand the different ways to use installation disks as rescue disks.

But it's also a practical book, which I'll keep after the exam. It's helped me install Samba properly. It's helped me learn about CUPS. I even learned how to set up kickstart over a network for a bunch of computers at work!

Summary: Superb complete coverage of what you REALLY need. Great LABS
Review: This book is absolutely PERFECT! Full coverage of what you need
and useful labs. Great exam questions too.

Summary: A great resource!
Review: This book is great for the beginner to expert! I've been using RedHat for years and I picked it up just as a reference to fill in a few of the gaps I have at this point, and also to help me stay updated with the latest developments in the RedHat world. I would say that hands down it helped me effectively prepare for my RHCE exam.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Great for independent preparation.
Review: This book is proving to be useful not only as a means of preparing for the examination, but it also serves well as a useful reference.
Additionally, while it does assume that the reader has some knowledge, it is not inaccessible to the less experienced.

Summary: Not worth your time or money
Review: This book is very badly written. It is horrible!! Not enough detail to truly learn the commands and the author has tried to cram in a lot of subject matter into one book but he has missed the needed detail. Very few exercises to cover most important topics. I had to give him 1 star because the system would not let me pick 'no star'. Some engineers just can't write and this author is one of them.
