Rating: Summary: all serious network engineers need this book Review: I bought this for my CCIE lab exam prep, and it was head and shoulders above anything else I've seen, including some very expensive ccie lab prep manuals. You will not be disappointed, Karl presents dificult problems and then shows you step by step how they are solved correctly.Even if you are not pursuing the CCIE ciertification, every serious network engineer needs to understand this material.
Rating: Summary: OK book, but very lacking in detail... Review: I got my CCIE a few years ago, so when asked I reviewed this book at the request of co-workers for content and validity. I was not impressed, as there are too many errors and verbose language. The book is OK to use as a rough guide, but I suggest if you buy this book you better also look at buying a few other books to fill in all the gaps. I think this book can assist in Lab Preparation, but you will need so much more...
Rating: Summary: Excellent CCIE Lab Prep Review: I have used several ccie lab preps and books but have never come across anything as good as this one. I just wish it had come out a few months earlier, so I would have more time to pratice the labs. The book is jam packed with numerious exercises and several ccie day-one-type labs at the end of the book for practicing the real lab. There are diagrams for every exercise and scenario. This book certainly makses Caslow's obsolite and threatens the the businesses that have sprang up selling ccie labs. The down side of the book is, this is vol 1 and doesn't have IPX, BGP, IS-IS, IPSec, and Multicast which the author says will be in vol 2. Also the solutions for the labs at the end of the book can be downloaded from a Cisco site. I think this should have been on a CD and included with the book. I can't even find the solutions on Cisco site; it is probably not postered yet. The price is steep, but compared to what is out there, it is worth every penny.
Rating: Summary: Full of errors and no config solutions Review: I should have put my money somewhere else.
Rating: Summary: A great book for CCIE study and real world network engineers Review: It not only teaches the "hows" but also the "whys" of networking. For instance, why do I disable split horizons in a Frame Relay multipoint network, not just how do I configure it. The labs are extremely well thought out, with many hidden problems that don't surface until you actually do the lab. The labs are also very difficult. The constant practice working through the labs also re-enforces topics taught in previous sections. There are many topics in the book that just aren't covered anywhere else. There are some "typos" but hardly any "errors", especially for a book of this size and complexity. The errors I did find were already covered in the errata. Kudos on an excellent book.

Rating: Summary: To focus on exam - CCIE # 9285 Review: It was my main book to prepare the exam. It is well focused on exam. It includes some fast and good therorical parts. During the exam you need to be fast. You get speed with confidence in your knwoledge and practice. The book help you very much in that sense because it gives you a method with the main steps, the traps you'll face and the main show and debug command. It offers nice and sophisticated exercises and labs. A very good way to check your level and practice "translation" of an instruction into a configuration. Does not include QOS, IPX, BGP but on those we already have the CD and good books. For those not familiar with Cisco Voice and ATM, it gives exactly what we need for the exam. With or without it, it requires work and practice. With some luck, I passed on the first time.
Rating: Summary: Great Book ... Review: No Errors... Great book full of useful information...to get the basics squared away for the lab...Must own.
Rating: Summary: OK book, but very lacking in detail... Review: Solie's book is a standard for CCIE prep. Like all technical books, this one is not perfect either, but they do publish corrections and do provide configuration solutions on ciscopress.com. Good practical information as well as some challenging labs. http://www.cciesecrets.net/ for more info on CCIE studies.
