Rating: Summary: The definitive work on Christian apologetics! A must have! Review: If there is room for only one book of Apologetics in your bookshelf make this the one. If there is an argument against Christianity it can be found and defeated between these pages. It examines not only concepts, but also relevant people on both sides of the fence in Christian Apologetics. Unlike most of it's predecessors, it's articles are not just bits of information, but well written and meaty. Geisler has put together a life time worth of work and research into this book. Do your witness a favor and have this on hand.
Rating: Summary: A RARE MASTERPIECE EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD PORE OVER Review: This tome is a remarkable masterpiece in its breadth, scholarship, and objectivity. The sheer breadth of its topics is unexpectedly wide. The scholarship and conclusions are virtually faultless. And the extent of objectivity, in an admittedly Christian encyclopedia of apologetics, is surprising.I was surprised at, for instance, its extensive coverage of the inadequacies of Islam from a Christian viewpoint (of course). Also, the fairness and objectivity of the author are quite evident when he analyzes numerous influential thinkers. When discussing Karl Marx, Mr. Geisler does not fail to mention some of the positive effects his works had on the treatment of laborers alongside some of the failings of his philosophy. This book is impossible to describe as other than a masterpiece. If you are a believer and would like to "have an answer for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence", then this a great encyclopedia to have.
Rating: Summary: Covering subjects relevant to evangelical Christians Review: One can spend hours (as I have) randomly reading this reference of subjects important to the substantiations [apologetics] of the Christian faith! Very encouraging and insightful to me as a newly born-again believer. A Christian owes him/herself answers to the same underlying questions that this A-Z reference covers. I see myself buying additional copies for fellow believers in the near future. There's a greater extent of objectivity to this encyclopedia than I'd anticipated.
Rating: Summary: good, good, good Review: geisler's effort is aptly titled. it provides a great reference for most apologetics topics. although some sections are minimal, each cites other sources for further exploration. in short, a great introduction/reference to/of christian apologetics.
Rating: Summary: A Very Good Reference Work With A Few Needed Additions Review: This work is both important and extensive. A number of the articles are near definitive. The buyer should, however, be aware of a few shortcomings. First, this is a best of Mr. Geisler, so it's strong where he's strong (particularly if he has previously written a book on the subject), but weak on things he's not focused on in the past. Actually, it's surprising that Baker would let one person write an entire volume on apologetics in this series when other volumes have benefited from multiple authors and there are other writers available who could have written more authoritatively on some subjects, particularly the science issues. Second, it desperately needs a proper index [not just an article index]. A number of issues are handled under headings which are not obvious, and sometimes over multiple separated articals that haven't been cross-referenced, making them difficult to relocate. This sometimes involves major topics (such as the Brain/Mind problem) which have no separate entries, though they certainly deserve them. Advanced readers will also wish he had dealt more extensively with the entire issue of non-foundationalist apologetics, particularly since his work is so solidly foundational. Don't let any of this scare you away, however, as it's well worth the read.
Rating: Summary: baker encyclopedia of apologetics Review: this is a landmark work by geisler. i believe it is a must for every library. the information it contains is detailed enough to fully understand, but not so detailed that it drags on and on. every apologetic subject is covered in this book. you must purchase it.
Rating: Summary: An investment you will never regret Review: This book is awesome, I have not much to add to the previous reviews. However I want to mention that this book is not an attack on calvinism nor a rejection of the gospel (!) like the reviewer below (from Kansas) asserts--and this is all he has to say. If he had had the books in his hands he would never such say such a thing: closed-mindedness and hypocrisy work out the contrary effect, he is only giving his beliefs a bad name with such an attitude. Anyway this book is one the best Christian books ever written, and an immense blessing for all Christians, may they be Calvinist, Catholics and in Eastern Orthodoxy. It is an invesment you will never regret, believe me.
Rating: Summary: Some good points, but Calvinism is attacked right and left Review: Some good points I see, but this book includes a lot of Calvinist attacks. This book rejects the gospel and thus, I will not give it more than one star.
Rating: Summary: Christians can be intelligent after all Review: I thought this book would be a collection of the superstitions and stupid thoughts that are underlying the books Christians write, and that I could use these as quotes against them. This book does not provide answers to very recent anti-Christian works (Drange's Unbelief and Evil or Pennock's Tower of Babel) but it shows that Christians can be intelligent, at least more than those Christians persons or books I come across. I must say that there is one Christian thinker whom I also value: David Duke. Not everything that Christians write is bad and some books (such as Duke's My awakening) deserve consideration, they cannot be dismissed.
Rating: Summary: Magnum Opus Indeed! Review: Is there a way to give this more than five stars? I recieved this today, after less than two weeks, and I'm already impressed. From Darwin to Deism,Kant to Kierkegaard,Hume to Hegel,The Jesus Quest/Jesus Seminar..I'll probably remember more later, but even things I really didn't expect were here, like James Frazer, and Neopaganism. You name it,its probably in here...all I can say is its incredible, every christian absolutely MUST own or have access(donate a copy to your library! They could probably use it...)to this book.
