Rating: Summary: A fun read Review: This book is a fun read, even though it's missing the deliciously bitchy edge of Jerry Oppenheimer's book Martha Stewart: Just Desserts. Still, if you want to know the story behind one of America's most successful businesswomen -- a woman who became her own brand! -- then you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of this book.
Rating: Summary: "It's a Good Thing" Review: Having read "Just Desserts" a couple of years ago, this new volume dove-tails that to fill in the spaces of Martha's business world. She's always at the right spot, at the right moment. Her singlemindedness of purpose & vision of what she wants carrys her through many a Board meeting. Here she is, warts and all. But at the end of the day, I'm still a fan of hers.
Rating: Summary: Fair and Fabulous! Review: Focusing on the events, people, and situations that shaped Martha Stewart's life, Byron (the author) examines what made Stewart the billionare and domestic icon she is today. Interviews with Stewart's friends/former friends/colleagues/family and exhaustive research into Stewart's life and times forms the basis for Byron's insights into the modern day media mogul. In his witty, articulate musings, Byron paints Stewart as a shrewd, tenacious woman of contrast who posesses incredible business savvy. Learn about Stewart's life in Nutley, New Jersey, her flirtation with modeling, her short-lifed career on Wall Street, and the business moves she made that both shaped her life and, ultimately, the American domestic aesthetic. DO expect a healthy dose of behind-the-scenes Stewart gossip and acidic comments by scorned friends and business associates. However, DON'T expect a hatchet job. Where appropriate, Byron is careful to temper innuendo with facts and figures. Regardless of whether you are a Stewart fan or critic, this book will likely give you a deeper appreciation of the success she has achieved and the impact she has made. Very highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Martha Martha Martha! Review: Oh my! This book made me think of the end of the Wizard of Oz: "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!!" This is an amazing woman no matter how you slice it. The research and digging that went into it flies off every page. I wonder what Martha will say? If you are a pop culture person this is required reading.
Rating: Summary: A real page-turner Review: Walk your dog BEFORE you start reading, because you're going to want to read just one more chapter, and then just one more. And then another. Martha's a great topic, but it's really the author Byron's style and attitude that make this such a great read. I didn't want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Martha! Martha! Martha! Review: Wow. Could this really be one person's life? Martha is laid bare as a true "playa" in the extreme...Every page has stuff that you almost feel like you have to know if you are ever going to watch her again. The book definitely grabs you and holds your attention---and lots to think about too. All I can say is I wonder what Martha will do now...
Rating: Summary: Not what I imagined Review: When I saw this book featured all over the news media, I thought it was going to be a sleezy hatchet job of the "Queen of All Media." Not so at all! In a surprisingly well written and balanced tone, author Christopher Byron tells the facinating story of a woman who we think we know, but in reality don't know jack about. In the end, I realized that she projects an image that is a perception, but not reality. It made me think about media manipulation, and how we really are in a cult of celebrity. I couldn't put it down, and I bet you won't be able to either.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating Exposee Review: Byron's work in uncovering and exposing one of America's most visible figures is, simply put, BRILLIANT. Through his dependable and accurate sources, the author opens the deep, dark, murky, Martha, the Martha nobody knows, and nobody wants to know, and shows her to the world at large. With the deftness of the master flower arranger herself, Byron stacks the dark secrets of her life and rise to fame and fortune, exposing quite a bit about the American consciousness as well. Simply brilliant!!!!! (****1/2)
Rating: Summary: Amazing. Review: Great read about an amazing woman. Love her or hate her, you can't help but be impressed by what she's accomplished. And Byron is a masterful storyteller. Never a dull moment. And funny!
Rating: Summary: Brilliant and Compulsively Readable Review: This book rocks! I literally couldn't put it down. Byron managed to get all this great detail on Martha Stewart herself -- juicy tidbits as well as insightful "fly on the wall" descriptions of Martha's business acumen and tough negotiations. Martha created her empire with the knowledge that she'd tapped into something unique and didn't let anything stand in her way. She truly is a woman ahead of her time, and I found myself often in awe at what she accomplished while reading ths book. But after reading MARTHA INC, I know I wouldn't ever want to work for her or fall victim to a "Martha Moment"! What a complex creature. What a great read!
