Rating: Summary: A Classic. Review: A fairy tale of a man who all of us, in one way or another, envy for truly being free of inhibitions.
Rating: Summary: Pure Hysteria Review: Wow .... what an interesting read. From the beginning paragraph to the end it is one of the most convoluted books I have ever read. This book really is "A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream." Thompson and his "attourney" do so many drugs in this book, you would think that they were madmen. However, on this strange trip it's is Thompson's madness that carries him through his dangerous adventures, it's almost like a catch 22. I would recommend this book to anyone that is mature enough for the contents. Thompson may be no "Hemingway," but he has a knack of giving us a different perspective, as valid as it is skewed. Perhaps this is key, to understand and survive in a mixed up world one must be mixed up. Thompson's brilliant imagination (or perhaps reality) will propel you right through the book which is easy 1 or 2 day read. Have fun with it.
Rating: Summary: A wild joy ride; emotions range from panic to hysteria Review: This book is for every stoner who graduated high school in the 70's, and for all the people who wanted to be a stoner. When this book was first published, America's attitudes towards drugs was mostly relaxed- pot was no big deal, and coke was the"hip party drug" of the day. I believed for 20 years that this was a true story, but when I reached 35, I realized no one could take this tremendous amount of drugs and alcohol into their body and live, let alone write. Regardless, no one can read this book with out smiling at the shear recklessness the 1970's had to offer. You will laugh out loud.
Rating: Summary: A failure in the eyes of the Good Doctor Review: Although HST saw Fear & Loathing as an utter failure of true "write-it-as-it-happens" Gonzo journalism, we have to this breakdown of journalistic process to thank for one of the most thought provoking books of our time. Thompson's background as a "hillbilly with a heart full of hate" and eye for what make us truly ridiculous as a species provides for some passages that we will collectively never forget. Sometimes, when the light is good and with the right kind of eyes, you can see the high water mark of an America that Hunter wrote the requiem for. Goodnight Oscar.
Rating: Summary: The funniest book in the English language Review: A profoundly retarded misanthrop heads into the desert at 100 miles an hour stoned out of his gourd and heavily armed. I can't think of a book I've enjoyed reading more. Joseph Heller's "Catch 22" and Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita" seem almost tame by comparison. Dr. Thompson is a very sick, disturbed individual. But if I had to take one book to a desert island it would be "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". It doesn't get any better than this, folks. J.S.
Rating: Summary: thompson is the king gonzo journalist Review: there has been nothing else to rival thompson's greatest work in the 25 + years since it was first released. not even thompson himself could ever duplicate the insane circumstances and crazy people that cause this great work to be written. i laughed til i cried, til i peed my pants! thompson gives you the feeling of actually reeling around las vegas in a red convertable with a 300 pound samoan attorney while under the influence of illicit drugs. i would recomend this to any gen-xer for a true image of the "age of nixon."
Rating: Summary: You must find a favorite quote! Review: Hunter S. Thompson puts you in these guys lives and you are suddenly a part of their twisted and foolish adventure. -Eve Griggs
Rating: Summary: a laugh-out-loud classic of drug-addled gozo journalism Review: I never particularly cared for Dr. Thompson's other works, but this book is a laugh-out-loud classic of drug-addled gozo journalism. I try to keep two copies of this book on hand so I always have one to give to a friend.
Rating: Summary: Really Quite Funny; An Important Read for the Overly Serious Review: This book is the funniest I have ever read. Truly. In fact, I was turned on to the good Doctor when living in American Samoa where he has a following among the expatriate community. Anyway, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the only book that has literally caused me to laugh out loud (which occurred during a flight from Pago Pago to Honolulu and made other pasengers to look at me as if I were insane). I recommend it to all comers and have gifted numerous volumes to friends and associates. It is the antidote for those Rex Reed types who'd try to cause us to take life too seriously. Read it, then buy several more copies and deliver them to friends who could benefit from a bit of the Gonzo!
Rating: Summary: WARPED!!! Review: If your mind is a bit skewed, you will adore this book!!!! The first half of this book is just stunningly twisted--in a totally hilarious way. The second half kind of unravels, which I suppose is the only possible outcome, but it's a bit too real, given the first half farce. All and all a great look into the egomania of a wasted adventurer
