Rating: Summary: Adrenaline Review: The problem is that few truly grasp the meaning of this book. And it's all right there. It's all so simple. "A savage journey to the heart of the American Dream." Right there on the cover. This book's brilliance does lay in its comedic delivery, as well as the no-holds-barred presentation of its surface subject matter, but the true, and often unappreciated, brilliance of the work is its examination of the deterioration of purpose which occured in the years following the massacre at Altamont, widely regarded as the death knell to the hippie movement. Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll had been the motto throughout the sixties. A life lived in reckless abandon, the attaining of Townshend's famous seven words. But such voracity, such avarice for experience was coupled with a purpose, a grand intention. Artists like Dylan provided hippies with a soundtrack and a belief system based in world peace and youth enlightenment. Suddenly, like a lock closing on a prison ward, Altamont hit, with four deaths, and then in 1970 the break up of the Beatles and the deaths of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. The hippie idealism, the sense of purpose was lost, What remained was the sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. Thompson magnificently examines how this loss of purpose cheapened the drug experience, and the youth experience as a whole. The tale, while hilarious, is truly somewhat sad, reeking of insecurity and inaction. The journey is savage, and the American Dream discovered is not that of oppertunity and new horizons, but that of encouraged ignorance and self-induced dementia. Enlightening as all get out.
Rating: Summary: A Brilliant Novel Review: Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas Catherine DaltonThis book was an excellent example of two people looking for the "American dream". Hunter S. Thompson did an excellent job of creating illusions within the readers mind, of what the characters were actually seeing. I found that the non-linear time frame was very effective, for time was of no importance in this novel. The only time that the characters referred to the time of day, was when they would say four o'clock, or an hour ago. The "American dream" that these characters were looking for, was more of a personal achievement. It seems that in order to achieve this dream that they were looking for, the characters stepped out of reality and had to look deep within themselves. It seemed that the dream that they were looking for, was found for themselves, yet for someone else it may not have been found. Thompson added a lot of humor to it, by describing in detail the illusions in which the characters were experiencing. Drugs was an enormous part of this book, the characters were on drugs throughout the whole book. To them that may be ideal, yet to someone else, drugs would be a negative way to live. In conclusion, I would have to say that this book was very well written and Hunter S. Thompson did a fantastic job of portraying the characters to his readers.

Rating: Summary: Funny as Hell... Review: Every so often, you stumble across a true literary gem that keeps you giggling as you read it, and thinking about it long after you've returned it to the library. "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" is one such book. The characters are hapless bozos that made me chuckle, riding across the country in a stolen car stock-piled with drugs in search of the "american dream". Thier adventures are craftily written by Thompson, one of the emminent fiction writers of our time. I'm now looking for the sequel...
