Summary: A Hero in Our Time
Review: I met Johnnie Clark two years ago. He told me about his book, and his faith journey. At that time the book was out of print, and I had to find a used one.

I started reading it and couldn't put it down! It well written, told in first person, from Johnnie's own experiences. It is a story of survival, friendship, excitment, sadness, personal heroism, and honor for the Corp. There are some very funny stories, especially the one about going to the hospital with a grenade in his pocket! This is a story of a modern day hero, an ordinary man who did what his country called him to do. And he did it in heroic fashion; in a way that can inspire all of us today, especially in the aftermath of 9/11.

The newer version has great photographs, and additional material. I bought four for my family and friends.

Summary: Amazing story of characters and friendship
Review: I must admit I was a bit surprised at how good this book is. Having been through my share of paperback Vietnam War books, I find a lot of lousy books out there written by veterans whose reasons for writing were only because they've been there, not because they write well, or even because they have a good story to tell. Not so for J. Clark's "Guns Up!" This book contains a wealth of characters that the author had met in Vietnam. His story pays tribute to the heroics and personalities of each and everyone of them. Through the author's narratives, readers will find themselves developing special bond to these characters. I even managed to find several tear-jerking moments within the book. The author accomplishes all this and more without pretention -- the book is absolutely easy to read and events within are involving. If you find yourself browsing the Vietnam War paperbacks, and yet can't decide on a good book, I recommend to you Clark's "Guns Up!"

Summary: One of the Great Books about the war in Vietnam!
Review: I read this book a number of years ago and saw it in a [local store] recently with a new cover on it. I picked it up and read the new information in the front and back. Johnnie tried getting this book published for four years before someone actually did. Even that is a neat story. I'm a Vietnam vet too. I spent two years there. ...My book is similar to Johnnies.

Summary: A moving account of the war in Vietnam
Review: I've read numerous war books through the years but I've never read one that provided such vivid details of the Vietnam War. This true story provides such a dynamic cast of characters caught up in the throws of war that you might think your reading a script to the next Saving Private Ryan. You'll gain a unique insight into some of the personalities that make this book so personal. This is a book that I read in record time as it provides non-stop action with a climatic, if not moving, finish. This book will not disappoint.

Summary: FRIENDSHIP THROUGH HELL AND WATER
Review: I've read this book five times, twice to my sons. Each time I've read it I have come away with a new admiration for Johnnie Clark and his buddy Chan. It is an incredible story about a Marine's struggle in Vietnam and the gruelling hardships they had to endure. Johnnie through his friend Chan saw how the power of God can be seen even in War. Meet such characters as "Swift Eagle", the full blooded Indian who felt more at home in Vietnam than the US, and the strange "Sam the blooper man" who loves to shock new troops to Vietnam by sucking on a human ear. Having read countless books about Vietnam, I have enjoyed this the most! One day I want to meet Johnnie M. Clark.

Summary: A Good First-Hand Account written by an M60 Gunner
Review: Johnnie Clark writes how dangerous it was to be an M60 gunner in Vietnam. When the cry, "Guns Up," was shouted down the line to him...it meant trouble. M60 gunners had a very high casualty rate, because the enemy would concentrate their fire on the most powerful gun to try and slience it. His unit suffered a very high casualty rate. Most of the men he served with, and some were very seasoned bush-soldiers indeed, were gunned down beside him. It's a miracle that Johnnie lived to tell his tale. This book was hard to put down.

Summary: A Silver Star 30 years late but still very humbling
Review: My thanks to those who continue to write such wonderful reviews. Wanted to let you know I just got my Silver Star, 30 years late. My records were destroyed in a 122mm rocket attack on An Hoa combat base. My old Gunny, my XO, Company Commander, Corpsman and others wrote me up for it again. God continues to honor me and so do you. Semper Fi, Love in Christ, Johnnie Clark.
