Summary: short scenes all in French provide excellent practice
Review: Finally a tape that teaches French without constantly lurching into English and breaking the French rhythm. Each scene is introduced briefly in English, orienting the listener to the scene just as you'd be oriented if you were there ("Father & son are loading the car for a fishing trip..."). Then you hear the dialogue in French three times: fast (identify the trouble spots), slow (figure out the trouble spots),fast (understand the whole thing). It's the way you'd learn if you lived in France and didn't hear any English. The conversations are funny, full of French wit, and the situations have enough tension to hold your interest. Some of the speakers use slang and/or have slight regional accents. I wish there were more tapes like this.

Summary: Everyone has got time for this
Review: I've know lots of people who buy Lenguages courses, follow them up for 2 weeks and then forget about it. "I don't have time" seems to be the excuse given more often. With this tapes you don't have any excuses: You are in your car, and you will be in there everyday, and there's really not much left to do, after all you are driving. So, spend you time wisely.

I'm amazed I've followed the course thru as long as I have.

Summary: Great to review with. Might be too hard for true beginners.
Review: Penton Overseas has done it again! Here is a French course designed for commuters. Like the guy who reviewed LEVEL 1, I'm also on the road for two hours every day. Please note: you must have a 30 min or greater time slot to use tapes effectively.

Level II gives a lot of practice repeating French sentences/phrases. It also has excellent spoken review of verb tenses. (I, for one, had forgotten how some of the verbs were pronounced: travaillaient?) If you studied French in school, you can't go wrong with the LEARN IN YOUR CAR series. If you have no French at all, I would suggest a more traditional course with a workbook.

P.S.: I got level I from my public library. It was too easy for me, so I went straight to this level. (Level II was NOT available for free!)

P.P.S: If your main interest is enlarging your vocabulary, these folks offer VOCABULEARN. I loved it!

Summary: A great tool to help you understand the French.
Review: This tape helps you understand SPOKEN French. The French language just SOUNDS so different from our English that a student can actually be quite advanced in grammar/vocabulary, and yet be unable to understand anything he hears!!!

The cassette has four dialogues presented in story segments. (Think of each segment as a chapter in a story.) So first you hear about a couple deciding to go out for dinner. Next you hear about a fishing trip. Then a family is planning its vacation. Finally, two ladies plan a shopping trip. Then the cycle resumes with "chapter 2" of each story: You learn how the dinner turns out, what happens to the ladies in the store, etc.

Like Penton's VOCABULEARN course, this is a single-purpose tool. Its goal is to help you hear and understand. I give it 5 stars because I really can't imagine any way to improve on the tapes. (Please note, there is another Immersion + tape you can try. I will review that one later.) After using these cassettes, you should record some French movies with your VCR.

All-in-all, this is a fine product at a good price.

Summary: Great continuing course
Review: This tape is a great continuation of the Learn In Your Car - French Level 1 book/tape. I found it very clear and easy to follow. My normal trips in my car are usually only 10 or 15 minutes and these tapes worked really well that way. I used my rewind button a lot to back up and play the same lesson several times until I learned it then proceeded to the next lesson. These tapes are designed to be used without a text, so they work great while driving, but a text which shows all the text of the tapes and the grammar rules is included. I found the text very useful.

Summary: Great way to practice your comprehension
Review: This tape is simply wonderful. I'm an intermediate student with very weak comprehension skills (my grammar is OK). I got tired of not understanding native french speakers so I thought I'd try these tapes. Well at first I didn't understand a word they said! I was so depressed! But after a while I picked up another word here and there. THEN I read the transcript (in French & English) to see what I missed. I've listened to this tape probably 15 times already and I'm STILL working on it. For $10 this is an incredible bargain. I've improved so much. See learning how a word sounds in French isn't enough, you must learn how words sound TOGETHER! And the only way to do that is by listening to native speakers.
