Rating: Summary: This book is terrible Review: I am a mathematics teacher and have used this text in an Advanced Placement calculus course. It is truly a superb book, very rigorous but also full of clearly worked examples, striking an ideal balance for the math or physics major needing a serious course in the calculus. One important fact: the student must be extremely proficient in algebraic manipulation to use the book successfully. Indeed, he or she will master algebra skills needed later in physical science applications. As a reference book, it is nearly unequalled. It also contains a very large number of excellent exercises and problems.
Rating: Summary: Review Of "The Calculus 7." Review: I've gone through a lot of math books and I have to say that this is by far the most user friendly math book I have ever read. It lays out the ground work for each topic/section and carefully illuminates all details, ommitting nothing. It is worded quite well and makes calculus understandable, even to someone as dense as I. I received a C in precalculus and this year I have the same teacher for calculus and am receiving and A. I owe most of my success to this well written book. This book makes calculus easy. Each section begins by laying and reviewing background knowledge and slowly builds upon it to fully explain all theorems and examples. Theorems are properly boxed and discussed. In fact, this book is so helpful that my school has made a stand to only use calculus books by Louis Leithold. I fully understand calculus and have actually had an enjoyable experience learning it, thanks to this amazing book.
Rating: Summary: Serious book for serious people!!!! Review: If you want just the down and dirty mechanics of c alculus and are happy with C's then go to the dumbed down versions of calculus texts that have the word applied in the title. ON THE OTHER HAND, if you are a serious student of mathematics with a real desire to understand the "why" and not just the "how" of calculus then this is an excellent textbook. If you have this book and a lousy instructor you will be ok. If you have this book and a good instructor you are indeed fortunate. The book is extremely well written, thorough, and rigorous. Leithold is a very serious author; pay close attention to what he tells you and you will be well prepared for advanced courses. This is the best first course in calculus textbook in print. I did not say it is the easiest, but again I say it is the best. I am not especially talented in mathematics but I put in the hours and lots of hard work with the result that when I reached my advanced courses (differential equations, analysis, complex variables, linear algebra, etc.)I literally breezed through those courses. You will not really appreciate Professor Leithold until you take advanced mathematics and physics. When you do take these courses you will realize what a great foundation he laid for you. Get this book and do not sell it back - if you go on to advanced courses I promise you will find it to be an excellent reference for those times when you need to review a topic that you haven't used in a long time.
Rating: Summary: Mediocre Review: Some things about this text were great - clear examples, many illustration, and a breadth of practice problems. However, some things were just downright frustrating - misprints, incorrect answers in the back of the book, and a lack of communication to the reader.
Verdict: Lukewarm text at best.
Rating: Summary: This book is terrible Review: This book is nothing more than a jumbled attempt at regurgitating technical jargon. It does little in the way of explanation, instead relying on overly-complicated repitition of definitions and formulas. PROFESSOR LEITHOLD, KEEP IN MIND YOU ARE TRYING TO TEACH!
