Summary: Great Health Guide
Review: "Women are not Small Men" is a great book. It's easy to read and comprehend. Dr. Goldberg outlines great tips for a healthy heart.

Summary: Menopausal Woman
Review: I have bought 3 copies of this book for family members and am ordering another one. It is the clearest, best information about women's heart problems and what to do about them that I have ever come across and because I have a heart problem I have read most of the non-technical literature available. Dr. Goldberg writes specifically about women's heart problems which, until now, have been minimized or disregarded. She makes great sense.

Summary: Very disappointed after waiting to read this book. : (
Review: I waited for this book to be released after reading a pre-review last fall about the author. Because she is a bit older than me, I felt she would have new insight and answers. I was sorely wrong.
After poring through the lengthy book, I was extremely disappointed. Not only was her program simplistic and condescending to healthy women who do take care of their hearts/and bodies, there was no groundbreaking preventive remedies or treatment--it was the same eat right, exercise, don't smoke.
The information on diet was nothing new--and the exercise program was similar to other books I've read. I suppose if you are terribly unhealthy, this book may give insight, but for today's women who are health conscious, this does not have new answers. An expensive read--that let me down. I also felt the author touted her practice as the "heart-saver," which is fine for those in NY--but what about those women in San Francisco?? I'll keep looking for a book that speaks to healthy women who want to prevent heart disease with an innovative program--that works. : (

Summary: An In-depth Overview of Women and Heart Disease
Review: I was extremely impressed with the calibre of helpful information every woman needs to know _ young and old _ when it comes to understanding heart disase and how it affects women diifferently than men. Heart disease in women is not considered one of those glam causes such as AIDS and breast cancer awareness as it is the high-powered entertainment and fashion industries. Heart disease is the Number One killer of women in the U.S. And Dr. Goldberg's concise, no-nonsense, clear-cut approach is not only highly informative, but also refreshing _ considering she is among the foremost experts in this field. Hopefully, her book will increase awareness of women's heart disease, which ultimately will save the lives of grandmothers, mothers, daughters, neighbors and friends _ many of whom have no idea what the symptoms of heart disease are, and how to detect and control such an insidious killer of women.
This is a must-read for women who are professionals in the workplace, as well as at-home moms.
Hopefully, exposure such as Dr. Goldberg's book, "Women Are Not Small Men," will also educate a society that still believes heart attacks and strokes belong to the men's club.

Summary: Lots of useable information.
Review: Many medical books written by doctors are hard to read, dry, boring, technical. Reading this book is like talking to a friend who is not only very knowledgeable but also very concerned. There is good medical information, and practical information on how to set up a personal plan for preventing heart disease and talking to your doctor. Best of all it is written by a woman for women.

Summary: What I Wish I Had Known
Review: Our daughter Jenny died suddenly at the age of 21. She has been under the care of a cardiologist for high blood pressure. Jenny developed symptons of heart disease that went unrecognized.
Her visit to the Emergency Room where she presented with palpitations, nausea, bilateral arm pain and jaw pain were dismissed as symptons of anxiety. She was released without further testing. She died at home the next morning. Further studies revealed that two of her major arteries were completely ocluded.
I have read this book and purchased addtional copies for families and friends.
I truly believe if I had known what I know now about heart disease in women, perhaps Jenny could have been saved.
I urge you to read and share this book with those you love.

Summary: Women Are Not Small Men
Review: This book should be required reading for every woman, every parent who has a daughter, every medical student and every practicing cardiologist. Dr. Nieca Goldberg' s book reads the same way she cares for her patients-honestly, directly and with great care and compassion. She shatters the myths surrounding heart disease including the belief that heart disease is a natural part of aging; that you have to have high cholesterol to be at risk for a heart attack; and of course, the biggest myth of them all-that heart disease is something only our fathers, husbands, sons, brothers and uncles should worry about. The truth of the matter is that one out of every two women will die from heart disease.
Nevertheless, many doctors still treat heart disease as a male problem-leaving far too many women untreated. Dr. Goldberg's message is loud and clear: women are not immune to heart disease. We need to take control of our health by educating ourselves and making certain that our doctors regard our symptoms and listen to our concerns.
What's more, Dr. Goldberg tackles heart disease and its treatment holistically-in addition to thoroughly explaining the biological causes of the disease, including the difference between a man's heart and a woman's heart, the different symptoms women experience as well as our distinct risk factors-she also discusses the role of hormone replace therapy (HRT) and how stress, anger and depression affect our hearts. Instead of ignoring the toll emotions have on our body, she explains how they pose serious health threats to women and she gives practical advice on how to reduce the stress in our lives. While acknowledging the fact that women are the essential caretakers, who put the welfare of others before our own, Dr. Goldberg empowers women with the knowledge that we must take control of our own health and our lives.
Women are Not Small Men is a wake up call for the millions of women who ignore their health. It provides the latest research-including in-depth information about medications, treatments, procedures, exercise, diet, vitamins and herbal remedies. Dr. Goldberg discusses complex, scientific information in a readily accessible, conversational way. This book will teach you how to protect yourself from heart disease-the disease that disables and kills more women than all cancers combined-even if it runs in your family, or if you've already suffered a heart attack.

Summary: A Much-Needed Book
Review: This is a terrific book. It's clear and to-the-point, with smart, sensible advice that should be required reading for any woman concerned about heart disease, which--since heart disease is the number one killer of women--means all of us. I read the book as someone who has a strong family history of heart disease who is, despite being reasonably fit and health-conscious, showing some early signs of heart trouble. I found it enormously helpful and encouraging. Dr. Goldberg doesn't pretend that the answers to fighting heart disease are either easy or painless, or that you can prevent heart disease just by taking a pill. Instead, she gives it to you straight, laying out just what you must do, along with what your treatment options are in the event that you already have high blood pressure or any other heart problem. She's also very helpful in navigating the tricky issues surrounding taking estrogen. I plan to buy several copies of this to send to my sisters and several friends.
