Summary: An Invaluable and Essential Resource
Review: Directed towards vascular fellows, practicing vascular surgeons, and senior-level (PGY-4 or -5) surgical residents interested in vascular surgery, this is a comprehensive, 3-D anatomical approach towards describing optimal exposures for every imaginable open vascular procedure. It would probably be of value to vascular interventionalists as well. I found this volume of tremendous help during my vascular fellowship, referring to it daily, and continue to refer to it during my clinical practice on a regular basis. The black-and-white line drawing illustrations are superb and offer perspective I have not seen in any other surgical atlas. It is, however, an atlas of exposures, not procedures, and assumes a basic familiarity with vascular surgical techniques. Each section is annotated with references regarding the descriptions of the various approaches in the literature, and benefits as well as drawbacks or pitfalls and hazards to be avoided. It is well worth the list price for any vascular surgeon early in his or her practice, as well as aspiring vascular surgeons. One of the most valuable books I have ever purchased. The section on thoracic outlet syndrome and decompression is superb, as is the coverage of exposure of the aorta from the thorax to the abdomen, both trans- and retroperitoneally, and there is comprehensive discussion of exposure and access to the vessels of the extremities at all levels.

Summary: A workhorse
Review: This book is a wonderful review of practical surgical approaches. It has enhanced my ability to visualise the anatomy in three dimensions. The drawings are gorgeous with a very intersting perspective - not just looking from the top or bottom. It is and will be the kind of book that I use not only for studying but for planning procedures. The accompanying text highlights very well the key anatomic landmarks in the dissections. I can wholly recommmed this as a vascular text - especially if you are familiar with operative technique.
