Rating: Summary: A Missing Piece of Hooville History Review: Coy Barefoot's history of The Corner at the University is a welcome addition to the more common and numerous UVa books which concentrate on the architecture or gardens of the Grounds or of Mr. Jefferson's role as the founder of the school. It is filled with photos and details of people and place are piled one atop the other. Anyone who has ever stepped foot into Eljo's, Mincers, Chancellor's Drug Store, Van's pool hall or anywhere else on the Corner will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: THE CORNER WAS THE CENTER OF ACTIVITY Review: THE BOOK WAS VERY GOOD AS THE AUTHOR CAUGHT THE "FLAVOR" OF "The Corner' IMOST ENJOYEDTHE PART REFERRING TO MY DAYS at The University [1937-1941].The chapter about Tim,"our bum' reminded me of Economics Professor Hyde Who wanted Tim to work for money.Professor planned to have someone put money in a tree so Tim would have to work to climb the tree for the cash. The professor said that he did not go through with the plan because Tim would not work but would hire someone to climb the tree for him. I am glad that The Virginian lives on today. What a coincidence, when I was inducted into the army in November,1941 at Camp Lee, Va, Reds Haskell AND Nick Gianakos, both U,Va. alumni who operated businesses at The Corner were there also. Reading the history of the corner was a pleasure.
