Summary: A MUST READ for all new EMTs & Paramedics
Review: Although it's been over two years since I've read (and re-read) this book, I still remember it as being a very useful review. Although its story format is unique, it really doesn't detract from the very valuable lessons that this book has to teach. This is a must-read EMS review for all EMS personnel.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great guide to fine-tuning patient assessment skills
Review: As an instructor in various medical genres as EMT, ACLS and cardiology, I have found this book to be an excellent reference and tool to help fine-tune the art of patient assessment. It was referred to me by a paramedic when I was stationed in Bremerton, WA, and I have subsequently used it over the years not only to help with my own skills, but as a basis for instructing others in pre-hospital and intra-hospital patient assessment. Although I am no longer an EMT, I still used this book frequently in my career as a cardiovascular technician. Sure, the story of the "search for the 60-second EMT" format can be a bit off-setting, yet the lessons taken from the book are ones that can be readily used in the field and can be of tremendous assistance in trying to sift through those obscure or complex situations. A great addition to any home medical library!

Summary: Save your money!
Review: I got half way through the book and lost my patience with the senselessness of it. It presents no solid material for veterans or green-sticks and is clearly written by someone who wishes to tell stories instead of present case studies.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Be patient with it
Review: I have been a paramedic preceptor as well as an instructor in several courses (ACLS, PALS). I agree that the story format is annoying (Please note, Dr. Bosker). However the information inside is invaluable. I keep one as a reference to students and encourage them to purchase their own. The first edition helped streamline my assessments when I was new.

Summary: Good book for reference on assessments.
Review: If you work in EMS and reading the textbooks on patient assessment, etc. gets a little dry, this book can help with getting the idea of assessments down. It is somewhat short and concise, and lays out the assessments in storyline format. The assessments in the stories are common ones most scene in the field (chest pain, syncope, etc.). The protocols used on the calls are also general and may differ from your area. Again, the main idea is forming a general impression, asking questions and picking up the signs and symptoms the patients may be exhibiting.

My 2 main problems with the book are the price (it's pretty expensive for such a short book), and the fact that the author writes about some "Jerry Donnely" like a religious follower writing about their God. It gets to be a little much at some points,... Actually it gets to be too much at some points.

If you get past that and get the book used (for cheaper), it can be a good book to break up the monotony of reading textbooks on the subject.

Review: Ive been an EMT for 3 years and I am preparing to go to medic school in the next few months. The book has helped my assessments and thinking outside the box. If the author could pep it up a bit and get away from the dull storyline it could be the perfect tool to increase your assessment performance.

Summary: A fresh approach and a must read for all EMTs and Paramedics
Review: The 60-second EMT is a great book to use as a refresher or to reinforce what the textbooks and classroom have hopefully taught you. The book emphasizes the important and sometimes elusive signs and symptoms that our patients may present with in an easy to read format. The author's story-telling approach is(not a list of tables and endless paragraphs like a textbook)addresses each type of patient (respiratory, geriatric, chest pain, pediatric, abdominal pain, toxicological, etc.)and then offers a practical "60-second assessment" approach for each one in both ALS and BLS treatment algorithms/modules. I encourage every EMS professional to read this book. Whether you are new to the field or have "put in a few years" I think you will find that you learn something new or remind yourself of something you haven't thought of in a while. Enjoy!

Summary: Good info, but annoying
Review: This is a good book for new EMS people or "old" ones. It gives a good review of interview questions, signs/symptoms, and the underlying process behind disorders. The reading is kept interesting with clinical stories, and a good breakdown of sections (e.g. tox, abd pain, chest pain, syncope, etc.). I like going back from time to time and reviewing the sections. Definately worth buying.
