Summary: Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America - Review Article
Review: BOOKSHELF:Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitisby Fred Saibil, M.D. "In medicine, knowledge is the key to empowerment," writes Fred Saibil, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. His new book, Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis, can help people with these inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) -- especially newly diagnosed persons -- achieve this important goal. Part of the Canadian Medical Association's "Your Personal Health" series, this book offers an excellent overview of the symptoms and treatment of IBD. Dr. Saibil begins with a discussion of how the normal gastrointestinal tract functions, then goes on to explain what goes wrong in IBD. Chapters on such topics as symptoms, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatments, diet, and coping with IBD follow. Reading this book is akin to having a conversation with a knowledgeable and understanding physician. Dr. Saibil's explanations of complex subjects, such as complications and surgical procedures, are given in clear, simple language. Charts and illustrations are sprinkled liberally throughout the book. For example, a chart lists the various types of operations that may be performed for Crohn's colitis, depending on the location of the disease, and notes the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. Dr. Saibil's advice about quality-of-life issues is both practical and sympathetic. For example, in the chapter on living with IBD, he comments: "When you feel well, eat well. Consider that a little extra weight is like money in the bank....When your disease flares up and you lose weight, you will not be as badly off." While the tone of the book is upbeat, he does not minimize the difficulties of coping with IBD: "Having a chronic illness sometimes means a loss of independence. Patients who are frequently ill, especially if the illness requires hospitalization, need to depend on someone else to deal with such simple things as paying the bills. One of the hardest things for most patients to accept is at least intermittent loss of the ability to control their own lives." Despite such problems, Dr. Saibil asserts that most people with IBD learn to handle the myriad challenges they face, including job discrimination: "In many ways, IBD patients are ideal employees. Most become toughened by the illness and are more likely to come to work when suffering relatively minor illnesses which would keep many otherwise healthy people at home. IBD patients are conscious of the risk of a flare-up and of having to miss significant periods of work. As a result, they try not to miss work for any other reason." The book also includes a useful glossary and a list of resources. In short, Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis is an excellent addition to any layperson's library.

Summary: Great beginner reference!!
Review: Dr.Saibil does a wonderful job writing to us--the general public. There are no huge scientific words. If unfamiliar words must be used, he is very careful to define them for the reader. For new sufferers, this is the starter reference for you!!

Summary: crohn's disease & ulcerative colitis
Review: I have been a Crohn's patient for 20 plus years. Over those years I have tried to understand my disease and gain more information on medical advances in the IBD field.Unfortunately, until Dr Saibil's book came out I was left in the dark. I also felt that I did not have a tool to give to family and friends - to help them understand my disease. Several years ago I bought Dr Saibil's book when it was initially published and recently I have bought 2 copies of his newly updated version of Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis. I highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from IBD or knows someone who does. I use my copy to keep track of tests I have had and drugs I have used.

Recently I also visited with a newly diagnosed 14 year old. It was invaluable for me to have a book to give to this frightened young lady. I knew she would benefit from Dr Saibil's book since he writes in a clear, precise, easy to understand fashion.

While at the bookstore looking for the new edition of Dr Saibil's book, I was pleased to see there are other versions in this series that are being published to help patients with various health issues. Hurray - for authors and publishers who are out there trying to produce readable material for those of us who are in need of more information about our disease.

Summary: IBD Book Store - Review
Review: I recently purchased this new book published in March byFirefly Books. It's a selection of the Canadian Medical Association'sPersonal Health Series and written by an IBD gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto Medical School. In very clear language and using excellent diagrams, Dr. Saibil discusses IBD's signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and instruments, the role and effects of diet and nutrition, available drug options, pros and cons of surgery and possible complications, effects on sexual activity and pregnancy, insurance and IBD, and other quality of life issues. One major plus is this book is up-to-date on the latest IBD research and treatments. In my opinion, it's the best one volume guide to IBD available! On the CCFC and CCFA's book lists.

Summary: Easy to Understand-Informative book.
Review: I went to the store looking for a book that could explain what I am dealing with. I have IBD but they are not sure yet if it is UC or CD. I started reading this book and from the beginning I knew that it was different. It started by telling about your digestive system and how it is supposed to function, before telling you what IBD does to it. Every time this book mentioned a medical term, it would break it down with the definition. It was a very easy book to read and I found it to be very informative.
