Summary: Every home library should have a copy!
Review: After checking out the Graedon's book, we stocked up on a few items as we headed out of town for a weekend camping trip. One of their recommendations is Alka-Seltzer for bee stings. (We had never heard of this!) When one of our daughters was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a bee while identifying wild flowers, we popped a wet Alka-Seltzer on the site of the sting. She was skeptical, but the pain and swelling was completely gone in a few minutes. We won't go anywhere without Alka-Seltzer this summer and a few of the other home remedies they recommend. Excellent! Everybody needs a copy in their home library.

Summary: Aspartame (neurotoxin) for osteoarthritis?
Review: Great complete guide to herbals. Handy and well written. As you tune up your health with these remedies, it it good to know what interactions can occur. Glad I bought it. May I recommend "Care and Feeding of Your brain" as a companion for those interested in brain-active herbs and supplements. Excellent guide overall! Kudos to the authors.

Summary: Good to have on hand if you self-medicate!
Review: If you take any herbal supplements, this might just be a good book to have as a reference. Did you know that taking St. John's wort and antidepressants can cause excess serotonin to be produced resulting in severe agitation, nausea, confusion and possibly even a heart attack? Well, according to a list of drugs that don't mix, that could happen.

The authors suggest you read this book before taking any medications (prescriptions and OTC drugs). You might also want to ask your doctor if there is any medication you should not take with any new prescription drug he gives you. Most pharmacies will give you a list, but more often than not, there is no information on herbal medications or reactions.

Kava Kava can cause sedation if taken with Xanaz or Valium. Xanax and Valium also should never be taken with alcohol or it will cause extreme sedation.

Ginkgo biloba can cause excessive bleeding if taken with Coumadin or Aspirin. Ginseng can increase the potency of estrogen. Echinacea should not be taken with Ketoconazole or methotrexate for more than eight weeks or it will cause liver damage.

If Antibiotics are taken with milk or other dairy products, it may not be fully absorbed and cause the infection to persist.

A great book to help you see what you can and can't take together. Hopefully you will just take Herbs. They usually have less side effects, but you do have to read up about them.

Summary: A wonderful source of quality information on home remedies!
Review: This book is a must for any serious medical library. The section on herbs is as close as I've seen to a PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) for herbs--active ingredients, dose, adverse effects, etc. The authors have done a great job pulling together what information on herbs is out there into a very useful format. The section on home remedies is also very nice. Who would have ever guessed a coconut macaroon could be medically useful? ... or meat tenderizer. (Not to mention having few side effects.) Some of the stories of how these home remedies were discovered also make for good reading. Overall, a wonderfully useful compendium of natural remedies that values both empirical as well as anectdotal knowledge.

Summary: A must for every home
Review: This book should be read by anyone interested in being an informed health-care consumer. It will not replace the advice of your physician, but will give you a great deal of information your physician may not have. In this way you and your doctor can be colleagues in addressing your health maintenance.

The book is well-written, well-researched, and very easy to use. In these days of high prescription costs, it pays to try home and herbal remedies. After all, if they don't work for you, the drugs will always be waiting on the pharmacy shelf.

Summary: The People's Pharmacy by Joe Graedon
Review: This is an excellent reference work. The author defines a
typical drug and explains the FDA process of oversight. For
a variety of drugs, he explains the benefits, as well as
the downside. There are extensive sections on adverse drug
reactions. Toward the end of the book, the author explains
how to save money on drugs and safe self-treatment programs.
Overall, the book is a valuable addition to any personal
health care library.
