Rating: Summary: Concise, with insight...and a bit dated... Review: This book briefly explains many aspects of the economy including unemployment, inflation, free trade, etc. at a professional level. The factors are then married and the opinions of such connections by leading economists are added. The author isn't tell the reader what to think, but he clearly states what HE thinks and outlines his arguments in a well-ordered, easy to follow manner.Even had I had been compelled to read it for a graduate economics course, I would have chosen to read it.
Rating: Summary: clear, almost prescient Review: This book was written when Americans were worried about Japan's so-called ascendence in the late 1980s. That makes is a bit dated, but it is still a great assessement of the strnegths and weaknesses of US economy. For the most part, Krugman was right: we underestimated our strenghts and over-esteemed those of Japan, as the last decade demostrates. For an economist, Krugman is a great writer as well, and his irascibility is fun, though not, I imagine, if his scorn is directed towards you.
