Rating: Summary: Good Information at a Basic Level Review: This is a great resource for those who are looking for an understanding of what the industry is all about and step by step advice on how to enter the profession. Nancy's book was not the first book I read on Financial Planning. I'd read probably two or three others before she came out with her book and still had lots of questions about the nuts and bolts. I loved the book and found it very comprehensive. As a career changer, my biggest questions revolved around pros and cons of the various educational options and the process to move into the field. The chapter that discussed "planners who have been in the industry five years or less, and how they made the transition" was very enlightening for me.Nancy's approach to the profession is definitely others-focused (you might say altruistic). You won't learn how to be a top producer from her narrative, but if you're looking for a multitude of insights into a profession that can be challenging, exciting, fulfilling, and rewarding through the service you provide to others, this is definitely the book. For me it was exactly what I was looking for.
Rating: Summary: None better if you're interested in a fin. planning career Review: This is easily the best "getting started" resource on this subject--anywhere. Nancy has a great deal of personal experience as a career financial planner; she has also culled insights offered by literally hundreds of experienced practitioners, and has also borrowed some of the most intimate material from the industry chat rooms (where she serves as a formal moderator and, occasionally, referee). Be warned, though; the book is going to be reviewed unfavorably by, and disliked by, people whose main focus is to push high-commission investment products, or who view financial planning primarily as a sales career. So You Want to be a Financial Planner offers you strictly the high road into the profession, which, over the long term, is the most satisfying and most rewarding. Who am I? I'm the publisher of a newsletter on the financial planning profession. Whenever anybody asks me hard questions about how to get into this business (which happens at least twice a week), I simply refer them over to this reference book. It has made my life easier as well.
Rating: Summary: The Absolute Best!!! Review: This is the absolute BEST reference I've read on becoming a financial planner. The book reads as easily as a novel. In fact, it was harder to put down than most novels I've read lately. It is practical, informative, and enlightening. Not only were my inital questions answered in the text, Nancy Langdon Jones provides a "lifeline" of open communication by use of the internet. There are tons of useful websites, references and e-mail addresses throughout the book. This book prompted me to finally take action and enroll in an online Financial Planning course. (You can also find this information in her book.) I have to say that Nancy's book played a huge part in changing my life. I highly recommend it for anyone who has questions about a future career in financial planning!
Rating: Summary: A "must read" for anyone entering the finan. planning field Review: This is the only book I know of that aims to help people at the beginning of their financial planning career. The book is based on many years of experience the author had advising hundreds of beginning financial planners. It also contains the wisdom of many other financial planning professionals interviewed by the author. Reading this book can make a difference between a successful career and a failure. It is a "must read" for anyone entering the financial planning field.
