Summary: Great guide is lacking direction for clueless investors
Review: Hey, let me be the first to say that Nolo publishing puts out great books that help sort out the world of legal mumbo-jumbo. I own three of their books and am very happy. So, now I am happy to find out that they offer this comprehensive guide on retirement plans which I am very interested in. The problem is that they give you the whys and whats but not the hows. Enter the 401(k) MarketBuster strategy. This strategy has given me a tested, successful method of maximizing my investment returns with a very simple strategy. If you are looking for the whys and whats like I usually like to do, get Slesnick and Suttle's book. If you want a quick primer on how to grow your retirement money faster than everyone else, then pick up the 401k MarketBuster. If you are like me and want to know everything I need to know about what is happening with and how to grow my hard-earned dollars, get both!

Summary: Single Best Resource Book on Retirement Plan Distributions
Review: I find this book to be a vital part of my search for a strategy to make IRA minimum required distributions at age 70 1/2. The section on inherited IRAs is especially enlightening. I wish more had been said about non-spouse beneficiaries and the need to express a need for per stirpes clauses when the IRA owner selects such beneficiaries per the standard form of many trustees whereby the beneficiary's share goes to the surviving beneficiary if said beneficiary dies before the IRA owner. By per stirpes the deceased beneficiary's share goes to his/her children not to the living beneficiary (s). Sorry this is not clear but there is a need for some clarification in this area of beneficiary designation. CGM

Summary: Taking Your Money Out
Review: I purchased this book for clarification of "normal" removal of money from tax-deferred accounts. Unfortunately, the money spent was a complete waste for that purpose. I could find no mention, not a single comment, about this all important topie. "Normal" removal in my definition is removing reasonable sums of deferred money from accounts, between the ages of 59 1/2 and 70 1/2. While I have since discovered what I needed to know, I find it most odd that there is no mention of this topic.

That said, IF you wish information on the topic of either removing deferred money BEFORE 59 1/2 or AFTER 70 1/2, I would rate the book a 3 star on those issues. However even there, I would dig for details on some topics and find only general information.

As they say "the devil is in the details" and that certainly is true when it comes of tax-deferred investments and the IRS. While I have been happy with Nolo Press books in the past, I would keep looking before buying this one.

Summary: Good Reference Work for a "Taxing" Subject
Review: IRS rules for withdrawing money from IRAs are pretty complicated. This book, like others from Nolo Press, offers very specific coverage of these rules. I was looking for information on how IRAs can relate to Living Trusts, and I found it here. You have to pay attention, but the book is written in easy-to-understand English as opposed to legalese.

Summary: A practical, easy-to-understand instructional
Review: Now in an updated and expanded sixth edition, IRAs, 401(k)s & Other Retirement Plans is a solid guide written especially for lay readers to better understand the types of retirment plans available in America. From tax issues, including taxes on early distributions, to the time at which one is required to take some distributions, to determining one's designated beneficiary in case of premature death, and much more, IRAs, 401(k)s & Other Retirement Plans is a practical, easy-to-understand instructional. Highly recommended for anyone cultivating an IRA or concerned about ensuring that the right person benefits from it.

Summary: Good Reference Work for a "Taxing" Subject
Review: One important area of the tax law has changed since this book was last revised in October 1998. Table S on Page A/30 has been revised for the year 2000 by the IRS -- make sure you get a copy of the updated table. Or see if the Nolo Press offers a newly revised edition.

Everything else is great -- 5 stars

Summary: It's a mystery, if not a novel
Review: The eggheads responsible for this book are writing to impress other experts on the topic at hand. This work is of little or no value to those who have basic questions needing an answer. In the introduction, the first two sentences are "This is not a mystery novel. It is a book about how to take money out of your retirement plan." Oh yeah?
The list of FAQs presented in the introduction suggest the book is going to be most helpful. But the authors fail miserably in answering many of the "frequently asked questions" they raise. A "self help" book it's not.

Summary: A must for any IRA or 401k owner
Review: Very well written and easy to read with lots of examples. I found this a great reference and is a must own for anyone with an IRA or other qualified plan. Great for anyone looking to know the tax rules and distibution methods of their retirement plans.
