Summary: Great Book
Review: This book is not boring at all, it makes you think about the brands that we buy ourselves. This book explains the importance of a brand. The companies try to get their brand known and the more it is known then the more success they will have. I liked the book because it made me realize that the business world is really competitive out there and they have to come out with something new and unique in order to set them apart from the rest of the other brands. I, as a consumer never stopped to think of how the brands got my attention and while I was reading this book I learned the whole process behind building a brand. This book is really informative and I believe that if you read it you will enjoy it.

Summary: eh
Review: This book is poorly organized and too long for what it says. The first two "rules" discuss the importance of the brand for the company and for consumers (good brands became essential when consumers gained more choices because they helped consumers decide which product to buy, and the company should make its brand a primary concern in all its actions). Rule three is "don't change a good message because you're bored with it or want to flatter the new company president." Rules four, five, and six deal with details of advertising and sponsorhip and are of no interest to anyone outside of marketing. Rule seven reinforces the message in the opening of the book by stating to remember your brand during a scandal. Rule nine advises to use your brand to encourage people in the company to work harder. Rule ten states that the CEO should be main person concerned about the brand, but that everyone should have it in mind. A short article would suffice to communicate the message in this book. The concrete examples and historical context which D'Alessandro provides are not worth the price of purchase. If you're not in marketing, you'll find half of the book useless because it's too specialized. If you are in marketing, you'll find the other half useless because it's too basic. I'm glad I read this book, but not because the material offered in it is particularly groundbreaking, but because it proded me to give some thought to the importance of brands. If you haven't thought about the matter much, this is a decent introduction. But it is not by any stretch a great book.

Summary: Every Business Person Should Read This Book. Powerful.
Review: While this is a short book and easy to read, it does not lack substance. Being in advertising and marketing, I know the value of a brand. But as D'Alessandro points out in his book, branding is the business of everyone in an organization.

This book would be of value to a CEO of a large organization and all of its employees or the owner of a one-person shop and all advertising people. Branding, after all, is something everyone is responsible for. It is not the exclusive domain of the ad agency.

The book shows how a large, well-known brand can lose market share overnight to an Internet start up. There is much in this book that will be of great value to you if you want to be a well-respected brand --- whether you are a big business or a one-person brand.
