Summary: Kevin Hogan's book is a must have for any business person!
Review: As a multiple business owner dealing with various personalities from assembly workers to board room negotiators, I have found this book and Mr Hogan's Science of Influence series, my continual reference for successful neogiations and influence.
I now have all my manangers and any employee seeking advancement to read this book as a requirement for promotion and inevitably see immediate improvement in their communication and management skills. In fact my managers always ask for more of his material.
I have books from other authors of Influence available, but it is this book and others by Mr Hogan that we always come back to because the techniques and information simply works the best truly within "8 seconds"!
I look forward to many more books from Mr Hogan

Summary: I'LL think about it.......
Review: How mant times have we all heard those words and wondered what the heck were they thinking about? Whether it was a customer, client, friend or family member, wouldn't it be nice to know.

Well "The Science of Influence" Broke the lid off it for me.
I have been in sales for over 25 years and doing therapy for 20 of those years. And i have read hundreds of books and listened to literally thousands of audios and videos on the subjects of Sales and Infulence and Changing people's minds. This book rises to the top. I Love this book!

This Book Helped me to see what i was doing right and what i was doing wrong, and then added a whole bunch more, "what to do right" that i hadnt even considered or heard anywhere before.

The book starts off by telling you what must happen before you even begin any interaction that you want to hear a "Yes" to. He tells you how to set up the context of the interaction, that puts the odds in your favor before you say a word. Then he gives you the Science in layman's terms to back it up.

The book then gets into the easily understandable science of what is going on with a person's emotions and thoughts in real time, as they are getting to "Yes". No more guessing. You get front row seats. You learn what is blocking them from yes and what to do and say to get around thier blocks.

The parts i liked best were the ones dealing with how a person goes back and forth between "Yes" and "No" When making a decision, and how to recognize it and what to do at those critical points to help that person get to "Yes".

Any therapist or sales person, teacher, counselor, manager Etc. will see the value in this book right from the beginning. It takes so much of the guesswork out of when you are attempting to persuade, by seeing into People's thinking and decision making processes. And he does it in such an understandable way. It is almost as if he is using these principles in his writing so we can get a first hand knowledge of how the process works.

It also helps the person making the decision because a lot of people don't know how to make a good decision for themselves. It helps build rapport by getting to "Yes" smoothly instead of "Forced" like so many older models of influence and persuation.

Along with the science to back up what Kevin Hogan says are modern day examples of how people and businesses and governments are using this knowledge today. This helped me set some reference points for how else i might use this awesome technology.
It also helps me to recognize those that may want to use this Model for sinister purposes, and how to protect myself against it.

I can tell you one thing. I will be looking for ways to get any other research on Influence and persuation from Kevin Hogan.
This book has shortened my learning curve by YEARS!

Dont be left behind. Buy this book right away

Summary: Clear and concise language that everyone can understand!
Review: I found the Science of Influence hard to put down. Throughout the book Hogan teaches you how to put his tools to work regardless of what business you are in. The exercises throughout the book give you an immediate opportunity to put the skills to work. Hogan not only gives you the knowledge but in addition he gives you the "How To".

This book is well written and has easy to apply strategies. It is a must for anyone who communicates with others.

Summary: I loved the book!
Review: I was heading out of town on a business trip when Kevin's book just arrived in my office. I put it in my carry-on figuring I would glance at it on my connecting flight and then start reading it in a few weeks, when I finished the other books I am reading. Well......not only did I glance at the book....but I read it throughout the flight, the layover and the next flight, finishing it along with many pages of notes I took. There are so many great ideas in here for anyone, no matter what their field. Thanks Kevin.

Summary: Skip this one
Review: I was hooked by the title and now that I have read it cover to cover, I am disappointed. This book is not destined to be a classic. Kevin Hogan adds current events in the narrative and this will make this book dated quite soon. The underlying content of this book have roots in other books that are classics like,
"Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes And How To Correct Them: Lessons From The New Science Of Behavioral Economics" by Gary Belsky, Thomas Gilovich.
Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion
by Robert B. Cialdini.
Selling the Invisible : A Field Guide to Modern Marketing
by Harry Beckwith. In contrast Mr Hogan's book is of poor quality compared to these books.

There are a lot of promises in this book. One is that the author promises that there is new material in the science of influence that he writes down but the new stuff if really few. In individual chapters he makes promises that is suppose the get the reader excited. But you read on and the text just pass by. Mr Hogan was applying the same principles that are written in his book and sadly it does not work because the written word is different. An example is the title: How to Get Anyone to Say "Yes" in 8 Minutes or Less! The 8 minutes is the subtitle is suppose to hook you, it specific and entails a time limit.

Also the writing is awful. This is not a well written book. I suspect that the entire book is merely an agglomeration of individual articles that has been published elsewhere. Within the chapters itself are references made to 'this article' instead of the present chapter. This book is nothing more than a 220 page promotional brochure for Mr. Hogan's own services and other related books.

There are many fine books about this subject out there, this reviewer has not read it all but eliminate this book as a choice. Perhaps read the books mentioned in the first paragraph of this review. Definitely pass on this one.

Summary: Not well written
Review: This book contains enough good sales "nuggets" that it is worth the price, but it also has serious problems. To begin with, the writing was not very good--I got the impression that it was written in a couple of weeks with the intention of getting it to press as fast as possible. Some of the paragraphs were so confusing that I couldn't decipher the message. Also, there were grammatical errors. Whoever edited this book should be fired--assuming that it was edited.

The title of "How To Get Anyone to Say Yes in 8 Minutes or Less" led me to believe that there would be some "8 minute strategy", but this was not the case. In fact, there was never any mention of "8 minutes" in the book.

Another section discussing the topic "when to ask" stated: "Just wait until you learn how to utilize this powerful information in your business..." Well, I'm still waiting! There never was an explanation of how to use that information.

Overall I have mixed emotions about the book. Since it does contain some useful ideas that will help me in the future I don't regret the purchase. However, had a little more care been taken in preparation, it could have been a substantially better book.

Summary: Are you ready to be a master of influence?
Review: WOW! Chapter 9 alone, "The Influential Secret of Oscillation" is easily worth 100 times (probably way more) the tiny investment in this book. This book IS destined to be a classic.

The current events added to the narrative only drive the points of influence home for application in the "real world." (How can examples be dated, history only repeats itself anyway, right?) I don't know about you, but I am tired of reading lofty theoretical ideals with no real world application. Kevin Hogan is a master of getting out of the "ivory tower" and showing applications to family, the workplace, and society in general that work.

I highly recommend this book if you really want to stay on top of leading edge info in the influence field.
