Summary: Freedom from Depression!
Review: An excellent Book! I could not put it down, even though I do not like scientific-data books normally. It was so full of good info and hope, that I was thrilled to read it.

The reputation of Stoll proceeds him, and his work here is excellent. I hope that it is updated in 2004 or 2005 with the latest findings and info that may help us even more. I suggest the purchase of Stoll's fish oil capsules. They work very well, and have almost no taste! The quality is superior to anything I have found on the market today!

Summary: How to better understand brain dysfunction in depression
Review: Andrew L. Stoll wrote un very interesting book on depression and diet. The tremendous change in the balance of essential fatty acids during this century and particularly in well developped countries is clearly documented. The war against fat is not fair and produce significant countereffects which lead to depression, obesity, metabolic syndrome and for kids underdevelopment of the brain. These facts are described with details inside this book. Obviously a diet approach is restrictive because physical exercise, meditation, environment and genetics play also a role in depression but one must keep in mind that without a good intake in omega 3 fatty acids it is difficult to maintain brain health.

Summary: The primary missing ingredient in the American brain.
Review: As a clinical nutritionist with 24 years experience helping thousands of patients, this book has a special place in my library of nutrition references. Fish oil (EPA, DHA, vitamins A & D) are primary nutrients that are missing in the standard American diet (SAD). Millions of Americans suffer unnecessarily and die prematurely because of omega 3 deficiencies. This book will become a classic in the field of nutrition. Read it. Follow it. Your health will improve substantially.

Summary: Omega-3 fish oil-Irish experience
Review: I first became interested in omega-3 when I read Andrew Stoll`s article in Archives of General Psychiatry in May 99.I tried it on a patient with bipolar disorder who had intractable OCD-she worried about Aids all day long.In just a few days her OCD improved dramatically, she stopped smoking, slept well and became quite relaxed.I then read everything I could find on the subject and found Donald Rudin an interesting writer.I was delighted to see Dr Stoll had written this book and have read it a few times.I have enjoyed it more than most novels and it has been very helpful to many of my patients.I have found omega-3 useful too for several other indications, including agoraphobia, alcoholism, drug abuse, sexual abuse, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, insomnia and withdrawal from benzodiazepines. It has opened a whole new world for me in the treatment of mental illness.Because I have been interviewed on Irish radio many people here take omega-3 and find it takes the edge off the stress of everyday living.

Summary: Facinating info, but have yet to see results with omega-3s
Review: I read Andrew Stoll's The Omega-3 Connection about three months ago along with Donald O. Rudin's Omega-3 Oils: A Practical Guide. Stoll's book makes a strong case for the mood enhancing qualities of omega-3 oils, particularly fish oils. Dr. Stoll details convincing evidence that omega-3 oils can be helpful in treating depression, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, ADHD, everyday stress, and even schizophrenia. Always searching for "natural" ways to treat my own anxiety and depression, I felt extremely hopeful after reading this book and ordered Stoll's OmegaBrite fish oil capsule product. After two months at 2.5 grams of OmegaBrite per day, I still have not noticed a significant difference in my mood. There are times when I think omega-3s have a mild antidepressant effect, but the feeling is so mild that I am not sure if I am imagining this or it is actually happening. I am still willing to believe that omega-3s (and Stoll's OmegaBrite product) are important in the treatment of mood disorders. However, they have not worked for me at this point so the jury is still out.

Summary: Baby Brain Development... Without Postpartum Depression
Review: Numerous studies have found that babies who are breastfed are smarter and healthier than babies who are bottle-fed. Now, Dr. Stoll suggests that the missing ingredient in infant formula is Omega 3 fatty acids, an essential building block for every baby's growing brain.

The down side for mothers has been that pregnancy and breast-feeding sap the mother's body, leaving her deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids... which may lead to postpartum depression. As a mother-to-be who has a history of minor depression, I was very concerned when I started to slip into anxiety spells late in my seventh month (shortly after my baby began the serious brain-building of late gestation). I began taking supplements as recommended in this book, and my mood was significantly better within a few days. After the baby was born, I had no postpartum depression.

I'm excited and I want to share the good news that my baby has Omega 3s to develop his brain... and I don't have to suffer from depression or anxiety!

Summary: Sorry it's all marketing
Review: The essential fatty acids idea is wrong. This was proven 50 years ago! It's all marketing and distortion of the facts. Check the newsletter, at Dr. Raymond Peat's website, "The toxicity of unsaturated fats".

Summary: Not just for depression
Review: The fact that the book's title has the phrase "anti-depression" in it is a bit misleading, as I think EVERYONE can benefit from this book. I think Dr. Stoll mentions many other conditions as much as depression, and he makes some very important points that pregnant women should know as well.

If even half of Dr. Stoll's research is true in the real world, this may be the biggest medical advance in a very long time. His clinical studies show a huge potential for Omega 3's to improve of health of all people. If you've read anything by Dr. Andrew Weil, add this book to your collection. Dr. Weil also believes in the power of Omega 3's. Dr. Stoll elaborates on it.

I also believe that this book is extremely important for anyone who currently takes Omega 3 supplements. Dr. Stoll covers the dangers associated with toxicity (due to what people have done to our oceans), and how to get around that danger and get your healthy Omega 3's!

Summary: good guide, but smacks of marketing
Review: This book does present a persuasive case for the efficacy of Omega-3 in treating depression. But there's a little too much of "so you should buy our product, because it's the BEST omega-3 on the market!!!" Yes, your company's omega-3 tablets are of great quality and high concentration. But excessive promotion detracts from the scientific message of the book.
