Summary: On target
Review: Our company has been successfully using this book in its management development classes this year. The book provides thorough overviews and detailed advice on the relevant issues and skills facing supervisors and team members today --- it doesn't discuss everything under the realm of leadership because you can't discuss everything in one book.

It precisely points you in the right directions, because success at management depends ultimately upon ourselves.

If you're looking for a smart and practical approach to leadership and teamwork, this is it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Ponder shows the difference between a leader and a manager.
Review: Our newspaper reviewed this book recently and we liked it so much we recommended it to our readers. This book shows how we get good leaders---we develop them. The Leader's Guide is a concise guide avoids technical jargon and cliches (like most leadership books use). It provides an easy-to-implement outline for those who wish to develop their leadership skills in 15 areas. I highly recommend it for you and your organization.

Summary: Poor treastise on leadership
Review: Ponder paraphrases the words of countless authors in this poor effort. There is nothing original in this book- nor motivational. I found this to be a simplistic and superficial look into management styles. After reading a small portion of the first chapter, it is apparent Ponder lacks professional experience to support the broad generalizations in this book.

Save your money. Go with another author who knows the material.

Summary: He's not talking about leadership.
Review: Ponder seems confused. In a simplistic sense, management is about left-brain processes (linear logic, written plans, checklists, etc.)while leadership is about right-brain processes (emotion, vision, etc.)

Ponder's book is primarily about management. He gives lots of useful left-brain processes.

But there is little or nothing about the empowering effect of leadership, whereby a leader proposes a vision and the intended followers rise up and follow, saying things like, "That's what I've always felt..."

Leadership is a skill that can be taught. Ponder doesn't seem to know what it takes.

Having trained and coached leaders, entrepreneurs, and managers around the world, I certainly recognize the need for a good work on this subject. However, the skills actually involved are non-traditional, to say the least.

Summary: Good ideas
Review: The book offers excellent insight into what I feel to be a difficult subject to fully address: leadership and management. While it is truly impossible to explain all aspects of supervision in one book, I recommend this book.

It clearly offers a unique and real-world approach to grappling with the issues faced by supervisors. The skills discussed in the book are invaluable, and if the reader applies the concepts and suggestions, he or she will benefit greatly.

Summary: Helped me and my staff a lot
Review: There are many leadership books, but this one has actually helped me and my team members. Why? It covers relevant issues we face every day, gives sensible solutions, and promotes a win-win environment for the manager and his/her staff. It hits all the topics that are pertinent without fluff.

I believe that this is one of the few books that will actually increase the productivity of your staff as well as help you become a better manager and leader.

Summary: Enjoyable and Relevant to Today's Challenges
Review: This book addresses head-on what is one of the major challenges in organizations today: lack of leadership. The book hits all the major areas necessary for a manager to succeed. Since it is written in an easy-to-read and straightforward manner, it can be used at all levels. I use it and recommend it to you as a superb resource.

Summary: Excellent primer on the basics and more
Review: This book is a great overview and introduction to the subject of leadership, and it's well worth the price. It's not meant to give theory (buy those books separately), but just the best of the practical and useful advice and wisdom that has been proven over the years by experts and successful managers in the work force. I recommend it to both novice and experienced supervisors. Great job on this guide for leaders.
