Summary: A "must" read for arthritis sufferers
Review: Anyone with arthritis of the hip or knee who is contemplating surgery should read this book. It gives a patient's side of the process as well as the clinical side.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Helped get me comfortable with having hip-replacement
Review: I'm 43 and was pretty surprised and scared when I was told I needed hip replacement surgery- although I was in a lot of pain and having difficulty walking. This book goes through, step by step, making the decision to have surgery and what takes place during and after. I've read several books, but this is easy to read and from the patients perspective.

Summary: need new hips, read this book
Review: If you are young (or older and active) and considering hip replacement, read this book. It was instrumental in helping me prepare for the ultimate decision; and prepare for the surgery- exercise, exercise, exercise! The fitter and stronger you are going in, the faster and better you'll be going out. Get involved, don't let the surgeons and insurance companies make all the decisions...they are your hips. Find the best surgeon...Johns Hopkins in Baltimore- Dr. Wenz did mine.

Summary: a must have
Review: if you have arthitis of the knee or hip, this book is a must have. i had a total hip replacement four weeks ago, and this book was my pre and post op bible. the o.t. at the hospital saw me reading it and asked to borrow it. it will now be standard reading for all of her patients.
there are advances in joint surgery that have occurred since the book was published, but the general information is excellent. my new hip is ceramic on ceramic through an "anterior approach". at the time of publication, the author mentions both as future improvements. however, the pre and post op preparation, the patient experiences, and the overall handling of the subject are worth the price of admission.

Summary: I (YOU) am (are) in charge!
Review: It is every patient's responsibility to educate themselves about their disease and to take appropriate action. The book tells you how to do just that. I always felt the material to be balanced and thoughtful, with views from the patient, surgeon and rehab specialist. I loved the little gray boxes filled with lists of what to think about--very organized. I especially liked the chapter about selecting a surgeon and suggested questions to ask. When I tried it, my doctor was very forthcoming with information--they like talking to someone who has done their homework. There's so much more, but it would be easier if you'd just buy the book!

Summary: very current and practical. good illustrations. easy read.
Review: Ron Allen and his story of athletic partiscipation in such sports as tennis skiing basketball is a chapter out of my own life. His way of telling it like it really is and the many issues that confront the person with arthritic knee or hip problems is so helpful as I like at my future. I have tried the suggestions found in the chapter on living with the arthritic condition. It seems to be helping and I want praise highly this book..I plan on inviting he and his boys to Traverse City to play tennis and watch the Red Wings train for the l999 season

Summary: Useful and generally interesting
Review: The experiences and explanations provided are primarily devoted to total hip replacement. Interesting combination of viewpoints - orthopedic surgeon, physical therapist and patient - makes book more helpful to those facing the daunting prospect of a total hip replacement. Helps somewhat to decrease anxiety about the surgery and recovery. Information is generally accurate.
