Rating: Summary: I HAVE USED THE MANUEL FOR YEARS. Review: IT GIVES ME A LOT OF HELP DISCUSSING SIDE EFFECTS, CAUTIONS, ETC WITH MY PHARMACY PATIENTS.
Rating: Summary: Comprehensive AND comprehensible Review: Let me start with my own qualifications for reviewing this invaluable book: 25 years' editing and indexing of professional medical texts and reference books; 20 years of creating "translations from the medicalese" for the rest of us; 3 years as consulting reviewer for an online health publication. In this work, I use both the "senior" Merck Manual, which is written for professionals (though many nonprofessionals have been referred to it by librarians and such), and this recently developed "home" version, which I can't praise highly enough. It is literally the first text I have encountered that provides essential medical information in terms the average educated person can understand, WITHOUT writing down to people. It covers all the basic diseases and conditions and many unusual ones, including prevention where prevention is possible. Clear, understandable charts cover such topics as common blood and laboratory tests. The index is superb, so finding things is easy, whether you are coming at the topic by way of some medical jawbreaker your doctor has mentioned (myocardial infarction) or by way of what most people call it (heart attack). Any household would benefit from having this reference on its bookshelves. Even as a professional, I look in this edition first and tackle "Papa Merck" or a specialized textbook only if I need more than the basic information.

Rating: Summary: MERCK MANUAL IS A COMBINATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM Review: The Merck Manual of Medical Information (Home Edition) is one of the most valuable books anyone can have in his or her study. With simple terms and definitions, this 1600-paged medical authority dissected every known human ailment, bearing the layman in mind. An unabridged section comprising of nine chapters explained drugs, prescriptions and pharmacodynamics in a way that non-medics would understand. There are also invaluable pieces of advice on both nutrition and fitness. Anyone reading this book will appreciate how all those scary mysteries surrounding medicine and surgery were bared in a reader-friendly format. Bravo MERCK! I commend you for rendering such a wealth of health information at peanut's price.
Rating: Summary: A book with authoritative, in-depth medical information: Review: The Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition is a "translation" of the 99-year-old Merck Manual for physicians, the most widely used medical reference book in the world. As the Editor-in-Chief, I became convinced that people have a need for authoritative, in-depth medical information because many copies of the professional edition were being purchased by people who are not physicians. The Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition was written by over 200 medical experts from leading universities worldwide and covers more subjects than any other medical reference text. It contains virtually all the information our professional edition does, but we eliminated the jargon; the book is written in plain English. It covers almost every known disease and has detailed sections on women's health (including pregnancy, normal and complicated); children's health and development; drugs; psychiatry; ear, nose and throat disorders; skin disorders; dental problems; sports injuries; legal issues; accidents and injuries; care of dying patients; and more. Like the professional edition, The Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition is published on a not-for-profit basis as a public service by Merck & Co., Inc.; a pioneer in medical research and education.

Rating: Summary: An Excellent Source of Medical Information Review: This book acts as an excellent source of information for both the consumer and the professional. The book's format is easy to understand, yet it provides enough information to make a good understanding about a broad range of medical issues. I would recommend the book to anyone who is looking for a good source of medical information.
Rating: Summary: A book for everyone Review: This book is a must for anyone who is interested in his/her own health. The book mentions about human physiology and then covers all of known human diseases. It is easy to read and lacks of medical jargons.
Rating: Summary: The Merck Manual of Medical Information: (Home Edition) Review: This book is an excellent resource of medical information. It was actually recommended to me by a doctor. He said that you didn't have to be a doctor to understand the terms, language, and the entire book overall. He was correct with his advice. The book is well written & easy to understand. It is a wealth of information. You can find out about any type of illness & treatment, as well as injuries & disorders. Originally, we wanted an informative medical guide to keep on our boat, especially with having a lot of guests on board. While on our boat in the islands, the information that it provided actually helped us get a guest safely to a hospital for emergency surgery. Needless to say, we have purchased a 2nd copy for our home. It's a "must have"! For the boaters out there, we can also recommend "Advanced First Aid Afloat" by Peter F., M.D. Eastman, & John M. Levinson.
Rating: Summary: Indispensable Review: This book is cheaper [on] AMAZON than the one I bought at my warehouse club. I'd buy it for twice list price if I did not already have a copy. The text is marvelously complete, yet devoid of fluff and fillers despite its 1500+ pages. The illustrations are very helpful, as is its exhaustive index. If I have a medical problem in the house, this is what I grab first, even before logging onto the net. It's that good. All that being said, it is not a complete medical library, you can get more detailed info by visiting a medical library, buying more specific books on the condition that interests you, and be spending hours researching a subject on the net. If you want to understand something medical in a hurry, reach for this first.
