Summary: Hormone disruption and what to do about it.
Review: Hormones are extremely confusing, and whoever doesn't admit this is daft. Now mix into this confusion the new information that our bodies don't end at our skin anymore. Substances in the environment, called hormone disruptors, are gaining entry inside us and can affect our hormonal signaling systems, making the issue of hormones and our health even murkier. Hormone disruptors can act like our own hormones, can affect how our hormones perform, and can even alter how our bodies metabolize our natural hormones. And where are these alien invaders found? In baby food, in your supermarket cart, on your dinner plate, in your shower and bathroom, and taking up residence in your fat cells. New studies show that they are also swimming around inside the average woman's amniotic fluid - that's right, in the womb - a place once thought of as the perfect image of safety and protection. When I was floating inside my pregnant mother, her doctor gave her one of the most powerful hormone disruptors known to mankind, a powerful estrogenic medication (DES, the first synthetic estrogen), and the rest is history. My whole life has been about being superestrogenized and suffering with multiple health disorders that come from excess estrogen. So when I read that substances in everyday food, air and water, and in products like plastics, flame retardants, pesticides and herbicides, were acting in a similar fashion to the medication given to my mother during pregnancy, I knew I was destined to write this book. Due these health problems I went on to become a woman's health advocate. I have lectured on women's health, trained doctors for decades on how to treat women using nutrition in the clinical arena, and focused specifically on how hormones play a role in what ails most women. In the mid-1980s, I designed one of the first natural menopause remedies for women who are at risk for taking HRT, For decades I have been a medical investigative journalist, nutritionist, lecturer, director of the Berkson Multi-disciplinary Clinic, talk show radio host, and presently am a consulting scholar at a scientific research think-tank, which is a collaborative effort between two universities - Tulane and Xavier in New Orleans, Louisiana. After they read the galleys for Hormone Deception, they wanted me to communicate to the public what the scientists in the ivory towers were finding out about estrogen, especially environmental pollutants and foods that act like estrogens. Estrogen is a wild promiscuous hormone. It's not bound by the same morals as you and I, and mates with all kinds of substances that reside in the average persons' body. No one, even in remote Arctic areas, has been found to be without some of these pollutants in their fat cells. And they get into our bodies from what we pick up through normal daily living, the background exposure in our homes and places of work. Since World War II, over 2,000 new chemicals have been brought into production every year. And therein lies the rub. As estrogenic pollutants and other hormone disruptors merge and mix with our own hormonal signaling systems, hormonal alchemy can occur. Changes take place in the body that were never meant to happen in nature. And it behooves you to find out why, and what to do to protect yourself and your children, your unborn children and grandchildren.

In Hormone Deception I take you on a magical mystery tour through all the research on hormone disruptors and what this means for breast feeding, intelligence, emotional behavior, immune systems, and many other human events and conditions. I researched this book for 6 years, waded through massive amounts of scientific data, interviewed numerous major scientific players on the subject, and then translated these facts into easy-to-understand reading. Hormone disruptors are being looked at for their link to hormonal cancers, fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, penis abnormalities, reproductive problems, sexual choices, hyperactivity, violent juvenile behavior, diabetes, lupus, and on and on. I separate the wheat from the chaff, the crazy from the plausible, and the quack-facts from the scientific ones. I have a passionate desire to bring clarity to this topic because it all happened to me.

Hormone Deception takes you by the hand and walks you through this brand new terrain of hormone disruption in three sections: o Part I explains what hormone disruptors are and how they work. o Part II emphasizes the scientific studies (in lay terms) that show how hormone disruption can be affecting humans. o Part III includes practical guidelines for minimizing our exposure to hormone disruptors and shows how we can help. Hormone Deception brings hormone disruption to life by interweaving the my own dramatic personal story with the emerging scientific research on this topic.

PREFACE BY JOHN MCLACHLAN, PH.D., head of the Center for Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane/Xavier Universities and one of the most well-known leaders in the field of hormone disruption. He used to be one of the heads of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and a prominent scientist in the DES story. He has spearheaded all the major symposiums on estrogen and the environment.

FOREWORD BY JOHN R. LEE, M.D., author of What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause. FOREWORD BY Jonathan V. Wright, author of Natural Hormone Replacement for Women Over 45, and Maximize Your Vitality and Potency for Men Over 40.

What famous doctors have to say about Hormone Deception:

A wake-up call for the twenty-first century similar to Rachel Carson's Silent Spring! This book is absolutely essential reading for everyone who wants to reduce their exposure to the unsuspected new breed of toxins in everyday life - hormone disruptors. These hormone mimics can have insidious side effects and unbalance our natural hormones. --Ann Louise Gittleman, N.D., C.N.S., author of The Living Beauty Detox Program

This new book by Lindsey Berkson complements the evidence compiled by Theo Colborn and the authors of Our Stolen Future and extends it into the realm of human medicine. --John R. Lee, M.D.

Summary: Hormone Deception
Review: I read this book based on the recommendation of another parent in my young daughter's day care center. I found Hormone Deception just brimming with information regarding keeping ourselves and our families healthy. I was especially interested in how hormone disruptors impact our children and truly appreciated all the good advice on how to reduce exposure in the home. I never knew our homes were such potential health hazards! I heartily recommend this book to all moms concerned with keeping their families healthy. Lindsey Berkson has also developed a fantastic website full of related information and links to other bio-environmentally appropriate sites (same name as the book, hormonedeception.com).

Summary: Empower yourself: learn about our surroundings!
Review: This was a hard book to put down. Scientifically oriented, yet written in simple language for all of us "non-scientists" to understand, it's reader friendly. This book applies to our everyday life. We already know many things cause cancer and other diseases, but to finally have a book that tells us what THOSE things are, empowers us to make a change. We've heard our water might be contaminated, well Dr. Berkson will tell you why and what exactly is in it that makes it bad. We've heard to be cautious of dry-cleaning gas off, and she'll cover that, she talks about heating our food in plastic trays and plastic wrap in the microwave, dangers in baby toys, baby foods, our soda cans and cans in general. She talks from a hormone point of view: in parts per billion (which is like a pinch of salt in 10 tons of potatos, her words, not mine) when referring to the sensitivity of these hormones. She warns us of estrogenic invaders, androgenic invaders, hormone blockers and such, that are in our environment in the form of air, food, cleaning products, water pollution and how these interfere with our bodies. The best part: she tells us how to reduce our exposure, what we can do about it by just being aware.

Have kids? Expecting to have any? Want to live longer with less of a chance of getting cancer? READ THIS BOOK

Summary: Chin-Deep In Toxic Soup
Review: Weather you realize it or not, your body has accumulated pernicious toxins through the simple act of living a modern life -- toxins which can scramble your DNA, cause infertility, endometriosis, fibroids, menstrual and breast disorders, learning and behavior problems, and increase certain cancers: such as breast, prostate, testicular, and other reproductive system cancers. Perhaps more alarming, hormone disrupters harm your offspring and children WORSE than they harm you, as your adult body does not pick up and process as much of the environment (air, water, food) as your developing fetus or child's body does. This book outlines in approachable, scientific language what exactly these toxins are, where they come from, how they affect the human body, and what practical steps one can take to avoid and expel them from the body through stimulation of natural detoxification mechanisms. The book scoring a perfect ten on the importance/wake-up call scale. Its message should not be overlooked.
