Rating: Summary: Awesome! In depth of the characters and the trial. Review: I loved this book! I was fascinated with all the characters, as well as the struggle for the 'right thing' vs. the money award. It was made even more fascinating for me as I had been near the area that the story happened (MA). Went into depth with the hero of the book as well as the families involved in the suit. Seemed to be objective -- showing both the good and the bad. Would highly recommend!
Rating: Summary: Gripping, vivid, and unforgettable. Review: Although not completely impartial, the book is a must read for anyone curious about torts and dispute resolution. Each page contains facts and information that provides the lay reader with a supplemental education on civil procedure to hazardous chemicals. The protagonist of the book is as unforgettable a character as some of the best novels. Very few books, let alone non-fiction, linger in one's thoughts for months afterwards; this one is unforgettable.
Rating: Summary: Excellent story of factual elements of American law/industry Review: This is written in the same vein of the most popular fiction lawyer/client novels, but it is true. The story demonstrates the best and worse of the practice of law, public priorities and corporate manipulation.
Rating: Summary: A compelling work of non-fiction. Review: Jonathan Harr's book is a super read. It kept my attention and increased my skepticism of the judicial system and of big business. I would recommend this work to anyone with the desire to read a really good book. It was enlightening and intensely enjoyable. My one complaint would be this: the book lost momentum towards the end and the ending is quite abrupt. All this considered though, I recommend this book to just about anyone.
Rating: Summary: Shocking account of corporate irresponsibility Review: A shocking account of the consequences corporate irresponsibility, and the struggle for justice that followed.
Rating: Summary: An engrossing, thought-provoking read. Review: This is a heart-wrenching, true story peopled by memorable characters, especially the flamboyant Jan Schlictmann. Entertaining though it is, the book leaves us with much to ponder: toxic waste and the future of the planet, the efficacy of our legal system in bringing about social change, and the nature of justice when it comes to real people. A must-read for anyone with a social conscience.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put down... Will I drink tap water again? Review: Makes you rethink believing everything you are told about your tap water. This book was the best I have read all summer. Non-fiction subject matter, but written in a fiction style that makes it fascinating, and keeps you from putting this book down for too long.
Rating: Summary: Best-Written Drama Ever? Review: This book is amazing. Period.
Rating: Summary: A Non-Fiction book for those who don't stray from fiction Review: This book is a truly gripping novel. If you were to pick up this book and not know anything about its history, you could swear it was a fictional story. That is how masterfully this story is written. I love books like this that make you think. This book made me think on several aspects. For one, it shows some of the major flaws in our legal system. It shows how a case can be so controlled by technicalities that overshadow the basic facts of a case. It also makes me think that something could happen in my own town like what happened in Woburn and nobody would find out till its too late. I think this book also improved my impression of personal injury lawyers. Before reading this I like many thought of them as simple ambulance chasers. Jan though shows that there are good guys out there who do really care about what they're fighting for. This is one of the best legal books I've ever read. It certainly competes with any Grisham novel, who is my favorite fic! tional legal author.
Rating: Summary: NON-FICTION THAT READS LIKE FICTION Review: Quick read! A summertime blockbuster. I treat those who have been affected by the environment, medically. Very difficult to treat and absolutely amazing in the detail that Harr has provided. If you have never encountered a person that is "sick" from the environment we live, this is a perfect example. I have already recommended the book to physicians and patients alike, as well as one city administration located in eastern Canada, that had E. Coli contaminated water all last summer. Folks, not only is this possible, but it is happening more than we think.
