Summary: The FBI website doesn't even come close!
Review: If you visit the FBI website you'll find only basic and carefully screened information. No surprise there. Although the internet and Ackerman's book both list requirements for the special agent position and other jobs (even though Ackerman's book has more), this is where the similarities end. For example, the FBI will never suggest ways to best describe your educational achievements, employment history, volunteer work, accomplishments, or other aspects of your background on the FD-140 application form or in KSA statements. Ackerman does, and if you've applied for an FBI job you know this can make or break your application because it's the first step in the screening process. The FBI also doesn't tell you how to prepare for and respond to specific types of questions you'll be asked during the structured interview. No surprise there, either. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Ackerman's characterization of the interviewing process is right on the money, and the same can be said for his guidance on the written exams. His description of the background investigation process, including the areas of emphasis that detrmine whether a security clearance is granted, is another example (of many) that you will not find on the FBI website. If basic and carefully screened information is all you need, stick with the internet and you'll be fine. If you want more than public relations material, this book is for you.

Summary: Possibly the greatest career book of all time
Review: If you would like a no-nonsense book that includes a step by step formula on getting into the FBI, look no further. Mr. Ackerman's remarkable book is loaded with tips and insights you will not find elsewhere. Throughout my life I have found that you can get just about anything you want with inspiration, determination, and reliable information. Now that I have read Mr. Ackerman's book, I have my share of all three.

Summary: Don't Take Another Step Without Ackerman's Book
Review: Let's face it - the FBI will only tell you so much about getting hired. Luckily for us outsiders, Ackerman's book picks up where the FBI leaves off. "FBI Careers" gives you a remarkably thorough picture of the FBI's hiring process and how to approach every phase, test, form, interview, and communication. FBI Careers also tells you what to expect after you've been hired, from the FBI Acedemy to the functions of the divisions and squads you could be assigned to.

Summary: Great Resource!
Review: Not a stone has been unturned in "FBI Careers" to lay it on the line for FBI applicants. It is written in a plain English, step by step fashion. "FBI Careers" is a must-have resource for any applicant at any stage in the application process.

Summary: You must do your homework first. Start here.
Review: One of my grad school professors - who served as an FBI Applicant Coordinator - highly recommended this book because I am interested in making the move from another federal law enforcement agency. I'm glad he did. I have discovered that the FBI takes job applicants down a path to employment that is different than those followed by other agencies. Half of the battle is understanding each application phase completely before applying, and then getting organized. "FBI Careers: The Ultimate Guide" explains how to capitalize on your strengths during the exams and interviews, and even how to turn weaknesses into strengths. Nothing is missing from this all-inclusive guide.

Summary: Good overview, but is missing something...
Review: The book is very informative in many ways than one. I was really excited when I received the book. Although I have to agree with one of the reviews given by an earlier reader, most of the book's information on employee requirements could have been obtained on the fbi's website (fbi.gov). The tips given, were okay but we have to face the fact that we'll never have an in depth detail about how to really get in the bureau because it's so confidential. So I was somewhat disappointed. But if you're someone beginning college and are thinking about a career as a special agent, this book is a good guide for you.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Best out there, bar none.
Review: The material in this book is highly informative, right to the point, and the advice is very helpful. It provides comprehensive all-encompassing coverage of the application phases from the initial application up to and including the background investigation and security clearance interview. Careers with the FBI also are covered extensively, including the qualifications, training, and assignments. Bottom line, if you are truly committed to a career with the FBI, this is the book that will get you there. It is absolutely the best book on the subject.

Summary: A MUST for anyone considering a career with the FBI
Review: This book has been an EXCELLENT resource as I progress through the FBI hiring process. Having read the book beforehand, I knew the answers to 90% of the questions that candidates asked while attending Phase I testing at the local field office.

Here's what I like about this book:

-It provides details for both special agent and professional support positions. It covers the hiring process in detail, tips and strategies to maximize your chances, 10 pages of salary and benefits information, an overview of the training process, and information on sub-specialties in each area.

-The book is well-organized, so I can use it as a handy reference to get answers to my questions quickly and easily as they arise, because you will never remember it all on the first read.

-The Special Agent Application and Selection Process flowchart demystifies this confusing and complicated process.

-In contrast to earlier reviews, I think the copies of the application forms in the appendices do serve a purpose in that they give potential applicants a sense of the time and effort that is required to complete the application process. You will need commitment!!

What I hope to see in the next edition:

-More information about testing that occurs between Phase I and Phase II for some candidates who possess "critical skills," such as foreign language skills.

-A list of places to look, both online and offline, for more information.

In short, I enthusiastically recommend Special Agent Ackerman's book. It is a rich source of data for people who are simply curious about whether or not the FBI is right for them, as well as for those who are actively passing through the hiring process.

Summary: This is your ticket to the Bureau!
Review: This book is a goldmine full of valuable information. All of the guidance on the Special Agent testing process is very helpful, and the author's advice on getting through the Phase II interview and writing exercise is priceless. Chapter 7, "Standing Out From the Crowd," shows exactly why Mr. Ackerman is the nation's leading expert on federal law enforcement careers. What a great book!

Summary: Down to earth and on the mark
Review: This book is all about landing the career of your dreams, written from an expert's perspective on exactly what needs to be done to get there. Anyone who knows they have what it takes to work for the FBI must read this book. It gives you answers to questions you never would have thought of asking, and clear insight on what works and what doesn't.
