Summary: Foundations of Education
Review: An excellent, thorough look at educational philosophies, history and present conditions in public schools. Well written, reader-friendly, lots of useful information in both theory and practice for the undergraduate majoring in education. Interesting real-life personal narratives, benchmarks in history for each topic, many useful attractive charts and graphs. Extremely helpful for undergraduates or those with no teaching experience.

Summary: Foundations of Education
Review: Foundations of Education - The Challenge of Professional Practice by Robert F. McNergney and Joanne M. Herbert is, in my opinion, a very well written text book to be used in an "Introduction to Education" class. The book is very easy to read, with each chapter following the same user friendly outline. The book makes excellent use of data presented in various chart and graph form. The "Voices" section in each chapter gives the reader personal glimpses of people in the teaching profession - presenting both present day and historical view points. The "Benchmark" pages at the end of each of the chapters help summarize the information from the chapter in chronological order, and even the chapter summaries help guide your study while reading the text. The "Online Activity" following each chapter serves as an excellent additional resource for the reader. The topics covered in the book are relevant to today's teaching profession, and give the reader an up-to-date view of what being a teacher involves. The book is definitely written for a person who does not have a prior educational background, who may be considering entering the field of teaching.

Summary: A New Teacher's Guide to Teaching as a Profession
Review: Foundations of Education 2nd Edition is an excellent book for the person entering the challenging profession of teaching. Professional teachers need to be knowledgable in school history, federal and local influences on school governance and finance, legal resonsibilities of students, parents, and teachers, the differing philosophies effecting education, social issues and cultural diversity in public schools today, along with curriculum and instruction, and teaching in today's challenging and tomorrow's changing world. This textbook has resourceful URL's (World Wide Web sites) to enhance the understanding of concepts and Reflective Practice exercises and Online Activities at the end of each chapter. Benchmarks help in understanding the important points in education history and the tables found in each chapter highlight important information. This is also an excellent resource book for all professional teachers.

Summary: Foundations of Education
Review: I have purchased several hundred dollars worth of books over the years for required reading in classes I have taken. I would have to say that this book is the "most for the money". It will be an excellent resource for me in the future. I plan to keep it as a reference in school-related matters. I only wish that I had had access to this material when I was first starting out as a teacher. The chapters are very well organized, and the visual aids (graphs, charts, pictures) were well selected and beneficial - the benchmark timelines helped to summarize several important events. The "Voices" sections in each chapter, featuring different viewpoints from real people on topics related to the chapter gave the somewhat lenthy, arduous chapters life and vitality. The inside cover of the book included educational issues included in the book. I found myself several times scanning through the list, thinking of my position on the matter. If there would be any fault of the book, I would have to say that the chapters could have been a little shorter. It seemed like a great deal of information to absorb. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in all aspects of education.

Summary: Foundations of Education
Review: I was disappointed in the textbook coming from the stand point of the course it was used in. The course I am taking is graduate level and is being taken by veteran teachers, this book is clearly geared to an undergraduate level. The textbook itself is well-written and easy to read. If I were a person that had never been in the classroom, I would have found it very helpful and informative. There were several sections of the textbook that I especially enjoyed: the "Voices" sections are real-world accounts and professional writings submitted by veteran teachers - they were great. I also found the benchmarks located in each chapter to be quite helpful - they gave you a visual reference of conceptual time. World Wide Web sites were also dispersed thoroughout the textbook, these were very interesting. This is the first textbook I have used that had Web addresses. Overall, the book made good use of charts, diagram, and pictures, which made it very user-friendly. I would have been very pleased with this textbook, if it were used in the correct setting.
