Summary: Best age by age guide for teachers and first time parents
Review: As a school counselor and a classroom teacher I found this a wonderful resource for finding quick information on the developmental stages children go through. Each staff member at our school was given a copy and we discussed it at staff meetings. Everyone seemed excited to have such an easy-to-read book that was packed with such valuable information. It has helped teachers to understand that often children are just behaving according to their developmental age! I'd recommend it to all educators and parents!

Summary: A Must-Have For All Parents
Review: Did you ever wonder if your child were performing at his or her grade level, but had no place to start figuring it out? Did you ever wonder if your child's classroom activities and lessons made sense? If so, take a look at Yardsticks. A good friend of mine who is also a teacher recommended this book to me and it has proven to be an excellent resource. It gives, in very basic terms, the range of abilities for each year (ages 4-14), as well as suggesting classroom activities for teachers. This is an excellent resourse, which, while not exhaustive by any means, should be an excellent first step in working with your child through the years and speaking with teachers. It's a great quick reference, broken down by age, then learning categories with bullet points within each categories.

Summary: Age appropriate expectations
Review: Organized by ages this book tells what you as a parent or teacher can expect of the child and what is too much to expect. As a Reading Specialist this book has been invaluable in planning for grades 1 through 5.

Summary: Best age by age guide for teachers and first time parents
Review: This book has been great for me as a first parent. The book picks up where my common sense leaves off. I frequently refer to this book after my own child has displayed a particular behavior. Yardsticks has reassured me many times that my 4 year old son is normal...I have given this book too many friends as well as every teacher at my son's preschool. Because the book is broken down by age per chapter, it is very easy to read and undersatnd without feeling overwhelmed.

Summary: Practical info to help parents/teachers understand children.
Review: This book is about children in school. It is designed for both parents and teachers and provides easy reference to expectations about children's growth and development in the classroom. I have tried in this small volume to consolidate a good deal of theory with years of professional experience in schools. My goal is to present important information in a readable format without compromising the key ideas passed down from the worlds of anthropology, child development, pediatrics and education. I hope you will find the information about a particular age immediately useful, and will also be captured by the obvious patterns of development. Enjoy the book. I hope you find it useful in your work with children.

Summary: Handbook helps parent/teacher understand children's growth.
Review: This practical handbook helps parents and teachers to better understand children. The user-friendly format provides clear descriptions of each age followed by easy-to-read charts which identify developmental "yardsticks" in the areas of physical, social, language, and cognitive growth. Teachers will find these "yardsticks" useful to shape curriculum. Parents will find the information they need to feel confident in discussing and taking charge of their child's educational needs. Author Chip Wood has worked with children for over 25 years as a classroom teacher, teaching principal, parent, and teacher educator. He writes with humor, warmth and deep reverence for children
