Summary: User-friendly guide for beginning clinicians
Review: After repeatedly checking this book out from the library, I bought my own copy. I found the organization of assessment and treatment by age group to be helpful, and the wealth of non-standardized testing methods both appropriate and easy to implement. As the author says, it is designed for the beginning clinician and provides a worthwhile resource for anyone working with children. Though it does provide theoretical discussion, it is primarily a "hands-on" book. I would recommend this book as a primary text, a supplemental text, or a resource for SLPs who are updating their knowledge and practice in child language.

Summary: a superb text!
Review: This book is a strong resource for any clinician dealing with language disorders. It clearly outlines intervention, assessment, different disorders etc. It covers a lot of material, but manages not to feel dense. It also provides tons of ideas for therapy... lists of children's books categorized by what therapy goal addresses (e.g. pronouns)... sample activities etc. Paul does a nice job of summarizing the current research and its implications for the clinician. I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first preschool placement without this book. Whenever I was stumped, this is where I turned. This is the type of book that you never get around to putting back on the shelf for you are always using it. Plus, as an added bonus it reads very well, more like a story than a text.

Summary: What's in the book and how to use it.
Review: This book is intended as a text for students in speech-language pathology. It is designed to be a comprehensive text, appropriate for use by both graduate and undergraduate students, that surveys the full scope of practice in which speech-language pathologists who work with children can be involved. It tries, at the same time, to be readable and friendly, to encourage students to consider several points of view and to draw their own conclusions from the information available in the literature. It uses a developmental approach to child language disorders, but also incorporates information about medical/etiological perspectives and discusses systems approaches, as well. The text has a primarily clinical orientation; most of the information is directly concerned with assessment and intervention. Theoretical issues and developmental information are integrated within chapters on assessment and intervention for various developmental levels, but the focus is clinical rather than on theory. The book is divided into three sections: Section I contains basic information about principles of assessment and intervention in child language disorders, multicultural issues, prevention, and about the various syndromes typically associated with language disorders in children. This section could serve as the basis for an undergraduate course in child language disorders, or could be used as the introductory segment of a graduate-level course. Section II covers specific assessment and intervention issues and procedures for developmental levels from birth through the preschool period. Family-centered practice, requirements of IDEA legislation, augmentative communication, integrating phonological and language intervention, and language sampling are covered in detail in this section. It could be used to teach a course in early assessment/intervention or as part of a graduate course in child language disorders. Section III contains information on assessment and intervention for school aged children and adolescents. It discusses curriculum-based intervention, collaborative practice and other alternative service delivery models, integrating oral and written language, whole language, and student-centered practice. This section could be used to teach a course in school-age language-learning disorders, or as part of a graduate course in child language disorders. I will begin working on a second edition of the book next year, and would welcome comments or suggestions from readers. Please feel free to send your comments to me at: Speech and Hearing Sciences Program Portland State University Portland, OR 97207 Thank you for considering using this book. Rhea Paul
