Summary: Finally a textbook with a point of view!
Review: School and Society: Historical and Contemporary perspectives, 3rd ed. by Tozer, et al. was an interesting read. The history of education in the U.S. was well mapped out, yet presented with a definite liberal viewpoint (which this reviewer found refreshing in a textbook!). However the book shows its age in its ommision of current special education legislation and initiatives. The IDEA, which was passed in 1997 is not discussed at all in this text that was updated in 1998. Issues in special education are an important part of our current educational perspective. Perhaps we can look foward to an updating of this information in edition 4.

What was particularly illuminating were the primary source readings at the end of each chapter. They added a perspective and often personal view of issues presented in the chapter.

Summary: School and Society a Success
Review: School and Society: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives, written by Steven Tozer, Paul Violas, and Guy Senese, is a great book to read be it as required material or strickly for a better understanding of the past, present, and future of American Education. The book chronicles the founding of the nation's education system back to Colonial times and post-American Revolution, as well as introduces the reader to such educational pioneers as Horace Mann and James Conant. It also goes into great detail about school reforms such as common school reform, progressive reform, and Cold War-era reform. The authors provide insight into the plight and promise of the American educational system.

Summary: School And Society Book Review
Review: The author takes the reader through the early foundations of public education to the present day. The reader is indulge into the ideology of some the most influential leaders and philosophers of education. Much of the early chapters deal with educational leaders such as Thomas Mann, Thomas Jefferson, and John Dewey and explores some key events that shaped their ideology of education. The text also explores some of the earlier sociological ills that infested public education, which are still visible today. The later chapters dealt with these problems and explore ways that educators can deal with them .The authors takes a look at initiatives that are in place to correct these dilemmas that still corrupt are schools today. At the end of each chapter the authors provide addition sources of reading material that either supports or provides a counter-argument to that chapters theme.

Review: The book is great if you are taking an online class. It is very thorough. In the back of each chapter they have additional information to help understand the material. It gives you not only the educational perspective but also the current issues that were happening at the time. It is worth reading just to understand how the educational system developed.

Summary: Ojectives Realized
Review: The reviews were very informative; it helped me understand the origins and development of the issues and processes imbedded in the school-society relationship. I was able to have a better understanding of multiculturalism, political economics and the future of American education.

The book helped me to understand that America today is faced with a profound test of its commitment to equal education opportunity for all people. This test involves whether we truly intend to educate all of our children or merely keep everyone in school for a certain number of years and hope they learn what is necessary to be successful in society.

The strategies I learn from the material include: 1) Standards; 2) Assessment; 3) Accountability; 4) Pluralism; 5) Competition and choice. In order for these things to operate we must be well informed and open to excellence in education.

Summary: Textbook review
Review: The Tozer book was a very thorough overview of the history of education in the United States. The primary source readings at the end of the chapters were enjoyable and gave a bit more depth to the chapter preceding it. I also enjoyed the photographs and illustrations (I guess I tend to be a very visual learner). I do not feel the questions for discussion and examination were necessary at the end of the chapters. At times the text was not very objective but overall was quite a useful book.
