Summary: Tozer is not a dozer! This book will help you out.
Review: School and Society by Steven E. Tozer et al was a well-written text that was easy to read. I found the text very applicable to my class assignments because it provided very helpful information. It covered such topics as understanding school & society; liberty & literacy: the Jeffersonian Era; the common-school era; social diversity & differentiated schooling; diversity and equity; schooling & African-Americans; schooling & American Indians; national school reform; liberty & literacy today; the professionalization movement; vocational & liberal ideals; the post-cold war era; and school & contemporary society. If you need information on historical and contemporary perspectives on educational issues, then this book will be a great asset!

Summary: An Excellent Textbook
Review: School and Society by Tozer, Violas and Senese proved to a very interesting read. There was an enormous amount of information written in a style that gave you a sense of visiting the particular era about which, you were reading.

There were times when the intensity became like a serial program. I could hardly wait to see what the next page encountered.

I did feel the authors were not the least bit inhibited about their political views. Readers may have to be conscious of that issue.

The book served well as a text and I have already used it as a reference for other classes.

Summary: School and Society
Review: School and Society December 15, 2000

School and Society by Tozer, Violas and Senese was a very enjoyable book to read. Each chapter presented informative and interesting information that connected the past to the present through lifestyles, education and politics. The pictures presented an accurate view of the time and Era. It made it easy for a person to associate with the Era through the pictures. There was a sense of easily putting yourself into the picture to experience the time and the mood. The authors' not only did research on the book, however, they also experienced some of the areas about which they wrote. Senese actually experienced life on a Navajo Reservation in Arizona, which added more credibility to his writing. The authors' text addressed diversity and equity in schooling girls and women, African Americans and American Indians. The book gives one a sense of a historical journey from the past to the present. It gave me a wider spectrum of our society. The concluding remarks and the primary source readings helped provide a total overview of what the text was trying to portray. I would highly recommend the School and Society textbook for informative information and as a reference source.

Summary: School and Society-an educational textbook
Review: School and Society was one of the most interesting testbooks I have ever had to read in an education course. The book reviews education from the historical perspective through the present. It includes the thoughts and ideas of important educators such as Thomas Jefferson, Hoace Mann, John Dewey, James Conant plus many more. The books constant theme is diversity and equity as it relates to girls, African-Americans, Native Americans, and other cultural groups that have been neglected in education and society. School and Society gave me a broader view of educational reform and opened my mind to different ideas that existed and those that exist today. Great pick by my professor at Nova.

Summary: A Review of School and Society
Review: School and Society, by Tozer, Violas, and Senese, presents the relationship between schools and the society they serve from a historical perspective. Each chapter presents its content in an informative and detailed manner, concluding with a summary of major points of emphasis. Additionally, each chapter ends with selected readings that shed a more personal light on the issue(s) presented in the chapter. Hopefully, the book is being updated for a fourth edition, as many contemporary issues in education are not discussed. Topics such as early intervention strategies to prevent future learning difficulties and alternative forms of schooling, to name just a few, are not addressed. Overall, the book is informative, and the reader can be assured of reading a thorough and enlightening text concerned with presenting the volatile relationship between American society and the schools that prepare young people to be members of society's future.

Summary: Tozer's School and Society is enlightening
Review: School and Society: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives by Tozer, et al. was a wonderful account of the history of American education. What the book lacked in visual stimulation, it made up for in the intimate details of the struggle for educational equity. The book was well organized and each chapter gave an in-depth look at the way public education has evolved in American society. Especially helpful were the concluding remarks, which seemed to summarize and pull together the ideas of the chapter. The primary source readings at the end of the chapter were also enlightening. They allowed the reader to hear other voices besides the authors' own. Overall, the book was an interesting and thought-provoking story of American schools.

The end of each chapter contains a concluding remark section, which highlights information that was meant to be conveyed. It also provides a primary resource section at the end of each chapter, which provides further information. Questions presented correlates with the material being taught and encourage critical thinking and reflection of each chapter. The Tozer, Violas, and Senese text proves to be more than satisfactory.
