Summary: Useless
Review: An absolutely worthless book. I spent 10 minutes leafing through it and then promptly returned to Amazon for a refund.

Summary: Buy this book!
Review: I have actually taken a couple courses on teaching reading from this author. She really knows what she is talking about. This book is the next best thing to learning from Dr. Herrell herself.

Summary: Best ELL Book Ever Written
Review: I have had the opportunity to meet Dr. Herrell on several occassions. She was a speaker at several reading conferences that I attended. Not to mention, like the lady from California, I am a student at the same college that she teachers, California State University -- Fresno.

The book itself serves as athe latest information in regards to second language learning. She writes about the keys to second language successes and triumphs. Most important of all, Herrell demonstrates the creativity between second language learners and bilingual teachers. Overall, this book serves as barrier for ELL learns to achieve academic success and to conquer the world.

Summary: Practical and succinct
Review: Over and over, I've looked for a book which focuses on practice rather than just theory. This book is just what I've been looking for! Each strategy is presented with a brief summary of the research behind it, practical methods to apply it to any classroom at any grade level, and examples of the strategy at work in two different classrooms. As an ESL teacher, I plan to use this book as a valuable resource throughout the school year. Don't be fooled by the title, though: these strategies will help all your students, not just English language learners. Teachers and tutors will enjoy using these ideas with their students.

Summary: Classroom-tested strategies for ESL students.
Review: The 50 strategies included in this book are the result of forty years of teaching in Florida and California. All the strategies have been field-tested within the past two years. I hope that teachers will try them out. I have found the principles in the book to be very supportive of increasing learning - both for teachers and students.

Summary: Versatile Book for Teaching English
Review: This book was a required text for graduate classes in teaching English as a Second Language. This book while simple and has fifty strategies is really for professional educators as the "lingo" may not mean the same to a non-teacher. The strategies employed could be used in even a regular/mainstream classroom, especially if you want to do something a little different. This is not the most thrilling book in the world, but then again, neither are lesson plans. I used it for ideas more than anything.
