Summary: Simply the BEST! Don't look elsewhere. This is IT!
Review: I wish I had known about this book before I plunked down my money elsewhere... I've used Hooked on Phonics ($$$$$) and a number of other well-reputed resources that claim to teach young children to read, but nothing comes remotely close to what this book can offer! This book leads at a pace that any youngster can follow (of course, a parent would know where to stop) and addresses the challenges (confusion between lower case letters b and d, for example) very nicely. Just can't say enough good things about the contents, the drills, and the fun illustrations (clear enough for youngsters to follow but not too distracting). Ms. Langton (co-author) is very personal and quick in responding to questions. Also check out their math lessons site... which offers same type of drills for math lessons that are FREE!!!

Summary: good resource
Review: My 3-year-old daughter loves the book and software. She asks to read the book and use the CD several times a day. The CD is very easy to use, even for a three years old. She can move from lesson to lesson all by herself.

I also love the simple clean layout of the book. There is nothing to side track the young readers. But, I don't like the way consonant is pronounced in the CD. It added a vowel to the end of quiet consonants like c and t. When it teaches sound blending, it has a long quiet between each letter sound. For example, it will sound the cat as C - A - T, instead of cccaaattt (sound each slowly and continueously). I think these are the major reasons that my daughter still don't know how to blen the sounds, though she remembers the letter sounds in the first 3 lessons. (There are 3 new letter sounds in each lesson.)

Summary: Simple and so effective
Review: My 4 year old works with the Reading Lesson every single morning, just after breakfast. He's very proud of how much he's learned in such a short time (and after some frustrating experiences with other methods, we're both relieved that it's been so easy). The drawings are simple, the progress is perfectly suited to his learning abilities, and I really think it would have been a year or two more of struggling if we hadn't found this fabulous book. My only complaint is that the pages aren't perforated, because I like to scan then in so that he can color the drawings in more than once. We also have the CD-ROM, which is made for both the child and parent to use together. It's very uncluttered and simply put together which helps him to focus on the actual words and letters. Highly recommended!

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I love this book! I tried this book with my daughter after scrapping the 100 Lessons book, and she loves it too. We take it at a relaxed pace that she directs, and she is reading. The lessons are easy and the pages don't have other distractions. She feels very proud of herself when she finishes the little stories. I am very glad I purchased this book and you will be too.

Summary: Now I have to take my daughter to Disneyland!
Review: When my daughter asked "when can I go to DIsneyland" I always answered "When you can read". She is four years, one month old, and with the help of The Reading Lesson, we're planning to go visit Mickey in a couple of months!

I love the way the book instructs me on how to instruct her. She loves the sense of satisfaction she gets when she learns a new word. The lessons are easy to understand, well paced, and combine activities like circling like sounding letters with practicing the new sounds and words. She also enjoys coloring the pictures after she reads the page.

I'm buying an extra copy for her preschool, so all the kids can have the advantage of The Reading Lesson

Summary: Best reading program
Review: I must say that the Reading Lesson is the best I've seen so far. After six months of looking for the right reading program for my five-year-old, I finally found the one that makes sense and works. What I liked the best is that it moves steadily from one set of sounds to the next without overwhelming my son with the whole alphabet soup. Most of the other books I've seen on the internet and in stores have pages filled with busy pictures, games, funny squeaking animals, and other irrelevant characters that are so distracting. Or they are utterly boring like Phonic pathways. Many programs teach phonics and forget about teaching reading. The reading Lesson is very easy to use. I also like instructions for parents before each lesson. The lessons, stories are just right for a young child. If you are looking for a super easy to follow program for a young child that has more just lists of words, then you should consider this program.

The best thing about this program is the CD-ROM. It is educational yet very entertaining. My son loves the Giggle bunny and wants to do the lessons just to play with the animations that are really cute. The CD-ROM covers the letters, shows and teaches blending and has quiz-like games that are fun and easy to do for a non-reader. There is also a little typing words sections. ... for a package that has a really good program and an excellent book is quite a bargain. I am giving 5 stars without reservations.

Summary: 11 year old with LD and CVI Now Reading
Review: As a speech-language pathologist at the California School for the Blind, I successfully taught an 11 year old girl with low vision how to read using this CD and book. She especially loved the CD-Rom activities and the positive reinforcement built into each unit. Reading the book has built her confidence to tackle other reading material.

Summary: The best program yet
Review: I will have to disagree with the reviewer who preferred 100 Easy Lessons. We started with that program and my daughter was very bored and very confused. This program offers a very simple format that builds in complexity at a reasonable rate. We completed the first two lessons in one day. It is now taking us an average of 8 days to do each lesson at about 2 pages per day. My 4 year old daughter looks forward to doing these lessons and is tranferring the knowledge she has gained into her everyday life.

I am disappointed that they do not treat a,e,i, o and u as vowels directly. And the silent e rule is somewhat ambiguous.

Nevertheless I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone whose child is ready to read.

Summary: Finally, something my daughter likes
Review: We tried 100 Easy Lessons, Alphaphonics, Happy Phonics and more. But finally, with The Reading Lesson, my daughter is enjoying it and making progress. The other programs moved too slow and were not fun. The cute little animals in this inspire her. She gets to color them at the end of a completed page. She loves that. She, now, after two lessons, thinks she might want to read some day. After the others, she never wanted to read. This was after only one or two lessons. We got halfway through 100 Easy Lessons before I finally gave up. She hated it. The Reading Lesson is great...

Summary: This is a great tool for teaching!
Review: I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take 15-30 minutes per day and get great results! My sons reading skills have really taken off and he is able to decipher new words with ease.
