Rating: Summary: Omit needless words. Review: If only more people heeded the advice found in this little book. Whether you consider yourself a borderline illiterate or a gifted and talented writer, your prose style will improve the more you consult this book. I write for a living and I make a point to flip through the Elements of Style at least once a day. Even the best writers will find great tips on how to make their writing better.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Reference... Review: This is the best investment I've ever made. This should be required reading for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Style Review: Strunk and White's book on style is small and to the point. The elements of style discussed are not necessarily applicable to modern creative writing. This book, no doubt, is helpful for writing formally-- such as formal essays, articals, and such. I didn't give it a full 5 stars because writing can be an art form as well as a tool, and for the most part this book treats it as a tool.
Rating: Summary: This is the solution Review: If you are someone who writes -- not only if you write for a living, but if you are someone who writes in general -- this book should be on your shelf, and it's lessons should be on your mind as you put pen to paper. The book is not perfect: it can be dry at times, and a few of the "elements" it discusses will seem obvious to anyone who stayed awake during English class. But the book will illustrate the most basic and most important rules of grammar in a way that has given generations of writers the foundation and the tools they needed to develop their individual styles. It has become a classic of English grammar, something that must seem an unlikely niche. When you see those back cover shots of authors with massive bookshelves behind them, you'll be surprised how many will include this thin volume. Even the compact and no-nonsense title has become part of the modern world's literary lexicon: look on Amazon to see how many books are called "The Elements of Style of" Something, whether it's Java script or e-mail lingo or architecture or the Unified Modeling Language. I am still using the third edition to this book, which was first published nearly 25 years ago. I glanced through the new fourth edition a few days ago and noticed the glossary of obscure grammar terms added to the back. I thought about getting it, but the glossary wasn't enough to persuade me to retire my old dog-eared copy with its underlined passages and comments in the margins that date back to my high school days. If you have an older edition, it's likely you already know the value of these elements of style, and so it's your call whether it's worth upgrading to the new book with its glossary. But if you don't have this book, then that is a problem with only one solution.
Rating: Summary: Where was this book when I was in school? Review: This book is a treasure. In a very few pages the authors taught me more about composition than any writing class I've ever taken. Its wisdom has improved everything from my technical writing to my business and personal emails. I wish I had read this while in high school and in fact purchased copies for any relatives still in school. This book's greatest teaching is in how to turn sentences of every-day construction into powerful "writing". It is a quick, unlabored read. I am a slow reader, but completed reading it in just three nights. The results of the author's techniques were immediatly evident. Read any of my previous reviews if you need proof.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely first rate Review: This little book has served tens of thousands of writers over the course of its amazingly long life, and it shows no signs of diminishing in importance. Perhaps its greatest virtue is its concise, no-wasted-words approach to writing, and it definitely practices what it preaches. It should be on the desk of every student and would-be writer.
Rating: Summary: An Invaluable Little Book Review: Everyone who writes - and that's just about everyone - should have this book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Style Guide Ever Review: If you buy only one writing style guide in your life, The Elements of Style by Strunk and White is the only one you need. I have read over 30 books on style, grammar, and writing, and this is the only one worth owning. Strunk and White accomplish in less than 100 pages what it takes other style guides hundreds of pages not to accomplish. In other words, they get right to the point. Clear, concise, and direct. I have read this book every year for the past 25 years, and it never becomes stale or boring. If you haven't read this book yet, stop depriving yourself. Buy, read and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Essential Reference Material Review: To be brief: if you do a lot of writing, consider this book an essential part of your reference library!
Rating: Summary: Unique in its delivery of principles Review: This book is unparalleled in its articulation of the finer principles of the English language. The writing is appealing and its authority on the subject is undeniable as demonstrated by its brilliant illustrations and comments on usage. Highly recommended.
