Rating: Summary: Nobody should be without this book in their collection. Review: The Elements of Style is as much as guide to success as it is to grammer. No individual worth his salt should be without this, "little book," in their personal collection.
Rating: Summary: read this if you like to read about grammar and style Review: This book is a good book if you like to read about styles of writing and grammar. Me-i thought it was okay, but my old english teacher loves this book. I don't think teens would be interested in this book, and I think older people would like it better. Maybe it is me, but i thought it is quite boring, but very informative. Maybe i just get bored easily -i don't know. In other words, if you are doing poorly in English class and are desperate for some help, read this. It will help alot.
Rating: Summary: Must have for every writer Review: Don't be fooled by its small size. The content is packed with useful stuff such as guidelines to writing, proper grammer and proper ways to use words. Ever since I read this book, my grades in English and Classical literature have jumped from a C to an A. Recommended for everyone, even for the one who writes a memo.
Rating: Summary: A book for the idiot and style professional alike. Review: In 85 pages of my grammar book, I learned about 5 million different types of verbs. In 85 pages of The Elements of Style, you learn some grammar you actually USE, as well some writing styles to make you a better writer. In order to understand grammar and style you MUST use grammar and style. Most grammar books don't. The Elements of Style does. It follows it's toughest rule, Omit Needless Words!(Rule Number 17, just in case you wanted to know). Grammar idiots can read this book and become a grammar genius overnight, the writing professional can remain a professional in their writings using this book. If you can only have one grammar book in your lifetime, The Elements of Style is it!
Rating: Summary: the Bible of good writing Review: "The Elements of Style" is the Bible of good writing. Sadly, more students who write graduate research papers in English literature need to read this book.
Rating: Summary: The Rules Live in Realms Beyond English Prose Review: I often coach students on the Internet newsgroups who ask questions about learning computer programming. And I often find myself reciting the 3 Major Design Rules from this book:
- Use active voice. - Omit needless words. - Use parallel construction on parallel concepts. No other book hits the Style target closer to dead center than this one.
Rating: Summary: Get this little book! Review: Then read this little book, and practice what it says! Better than many larger books on subject.
Rating: Summary: Essential book Review: If clear language is essential to clear thinking, this is the best thinking book around. Don't be without it!
Rating: Summary: Purchased 25 years ago for high school. Still have it. Review: My father was the best high school English teacher that I ever had. He recommended that all of his students purchase "The Elements of Style." When my son left for college, a copy of this book went with him.
Rating: Summary: Very handy little book to keep troublesome English correct Review: As a professional writer, I keep a copy of Strunk's little book at arms reach. I refer to it whenever I'm uncertain of usage, composition, form, style, or commonly misused words and phrases. I have other much more comprehensive references; however, Strunk's little book usually answers my question much more quickly. I have recommended this little book to friends who are starting college this fall, and recommend it to anybody that does any amount of writing
